ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Fine Addresses Marked the Close of the Semi-Centennial Week The Alumni Asscciation ot the Waverly high school are to be congratulated upon the men they secured for last evening. The crowd which packed Loomis Op-~ appreciated the cfforts which had been made and the three excellent which were delivered made a fitting close to the semi- semiscentennial week. The entire celebration from bes ginning to end has b2en a glorious success in every respect and will certainly do more toward umiting the efforts of the teachers and par- school. Dr. Godwin assistant commis sioner of the state board-of educa tion made the first address. He showed by statistics the vastly d.f. ferent methods cf educaticn now years ago. He showed that the influx of immigrants into the cities made this necessary because not nly the native born children were to be educated to make geod citis zens but also the foreign Fifty years ago a large percentage lived in the rural districts but now barn two-thirds of the popula‘ion resided n the cities, De. Heary Lepzinger head of the of N:w York city was the next speaker He had acquaiated himself thor- oughly with the history of the Wa verly schools and complimented those who in years past had worked to make the schools what they are. He showed how much greater cffort would have to be made in the future by parents and teichers in order that the growth of the :chools should keep pice with the growth of the town. free lecture bureau He argued for better ¢qips ments, better buildings and the best teachers obtainable. Ie sud all these tend to make better citi- ens and the wd dwell make town a safer in which to In intrcducing Dr. Rays happier place iege, Supt. Robbias said he was going to vary the usual order of introduction and he thea introduc. ed the Lyric Glee club who sang Union's most pcpular song. Dr. Raymond opened his remarks by saying that the song made him feel very much at home because he heard it all day and most of the night He said first he was going to tell how he came to be asked to make an address here. He said, the first principal of the Waverly schools, Prof Lang, was a graduate of Union and one of the first lawyers in town was a Union. Then the Mr. Meserve, was also a Union graduate, acd that explained why he was invited to come to Waverly. In a bright manner he stated that men ought to be educated not only to fit them for special positions but because they were men and in order to make men of them. He thought a liberal education broadened a man's scope of vision so that he could enjoy all he read and heard to a given extent. » Free Free News and advertising matter may be left at Gregg's Racket Store, Waverly.
