It was officially announced this morning that the Lehigh Valley freight transfer platform which for many years has been located just south of the Packer avenue bridge on Lehigh avenue, will be removed by the company and a new one built in the upper part of the yards. For some weeks there has been a rumor to this effect, and this morn- ing a Record representative inter- viewed Superintendent Kinney on the subject. That official confirmed the rumor by exhibiting a set of blue prints containing the prelimis nary plans for a new platform. The plans while subject to minor changes give an excellent idea of what the new platform is to be bike. It is to be located on the west side of the yards beginning at a point north of Bishop's coal yards and extending to within a few feet of the trolley bridge. The plat form itself is to be 20x6 30 feet with a freight room 40x100, and an office building 40x48. The plat form will accommodate 7.4 cars and there will be tracks on both sides The freight room will contain a warming rocm, toilet room aed a room in which the men can con- gregate. The office rooms will be up to date in every respect, and the entire plant will, it is expected, be equipped to meet the enormous growth in freight traffic, Oa the cast side of the platform there is a large vacant space which will be reserved for freight pur poses as the circumstances require it. The work of erecting the new freight house and platform will not commence before next spring, and in the meantime there may be some slight chaege in the plans. The old platform will be torn down and the space used for other purposes. It is not likely that more men will be employed or that it will decrease the force. The day shift will be larger, however, and the officials will be able to handle the large amount of freight with more speed. Miss Burns and her brother Miles, who is employed at this place, left for Rochester last night and will take the remains of their brother to Du- shore, his former home. The details of the accident are to the effect that a large force of men was engaged in erecting a building for the Easton Kodak company. The material used was concrete, and the foreman W, F. Costello had recently entered com- plaint that the sand used was an inferior quality. Yesterday afters noon the roof of the building fell. Several working men standing uns derneath were caught under the the debris. Burns was among the number and he aad another man were crushed to death. A third man was fatally injured and six- teen others were more or less bruised, though not seriously hurt, The deceased at one time worked as a blacksmith's helper in the Le- high shops at this place. He was about twenty-five years old, and during his residence here acquired many friends, He left here scve- ral m:nths ago and has recently been employed in Rochester, RUNORED INCREASE FOR LEHI ME Notice Said to Have Been Posted in Buffalo That Wages Will be Advanced 10 per cent A report was circulated here this morning that notices were posted in Buffalo yesterday granting an increase of 10 per cent in the wages of the men employed by the Les high, except those who are holdicg salaried positions, The lecal offi cials, when interviewed on the subject of the increase this morn- ing, stated that they knew nothing of the matter. Their attention was called to the fact that other rail roads were advancing wages, and they replied that the Lehigh would probably have “to get in the pro- cession.” This is taken to mean that if the Buffalo rumor should prove to be a myth that the Lehigh contemplates giving the men an increase in the near future. el am —— LOST OR STOLEN For a period of forty-eight hours the wise weather men in the em- ploy of your Uncle Samuel have been predicting a cold wave but the aforesaid wave appears to have been lost, strayed or stolen. Dur ing the past three day the mercury has maintained a place well toward the top, and the efforts of the weather men to make it go down stairs have proven futile. This morning, however, the government weather prophets say that we are to have a little more rain which will turn to snow, and finally end up in freezing weather, This will be good news to the coal men, and the average person will prefer it to several inches of mud. CK DIR in Running Through the City of Wilkes-Barre. Henry Murphy, engineer; J. H Loftus, fireman O'Donnell, conductor, fore the mayor of Wilkes-Barre through the city in violation of the speed ordinanee, The offense is alleged to have occurred on Friday last, and when the men were arraigned before the mayor there was a large crowd of interested spectators, including the division superintendent of the Lehigh and a large number of minor officials. Policeman Wood was the one witness for the prose- cution and he swore that he saw the train go through the city and that it was running faster than five miles an hour. The engineer of the train was called and said that as far as he could perceive the train was not exceeding the speed limit. After the conclusion of the testimony the mayor imposed the regular fine and an appeal was im- mediately taken, The company's attorney will attack the validity of the law. He insists that if the law were enforced it would take the average train a week to po over the main line from Buffilo to New York. ————— GREAT REMOVAL SALE We are soon to move our stock of merchandise to the R.
