Waverly —Four prominent resis
dents of Waverly were out for an
|automobile ride a few days since,
and run the machine to the vicinity
of Wilawanna. At that point they
| bad to cross the D. L. & W. tracks.
Just as they were upon the cross-
ing with the machine standing
over both tracks so that one pair of
wheels was on the east and the
other on the westbound track, and
a fist passenger train approaching,
the machine stopped, and all at-
tempts to move it proved futile.
| After struggling with it for some
(time with the passenger train get-
[ting nearer every second, a section
{boss came to the rescue. The
combined force cf the section men
and the four occupants of the car,
14 in number, succeeded in removs
ing the car from the track just in
time to save it from the train
They then examined the machine
in a less hurried manner and found
that the brakes were set, and then
the reason for the auto's tenacious
hold upon the track was revealed
to_ four surprised and chagrined
cilizens.
LEVY PAVING TAX
Waverly—At the meeting of the
board of trustees last Thursday,
the frontage tax for the new pave-
ment was levied. The whole job
amounts to about £6500, and is
apportioned as follows: The abut-
ting owners pay 80 per cent, that
iS 40 per cent on each side of the
street, and the remaining 20 per
cent by the taxpayers at large.
This makes the share of the vil-
| $1300, and the part to be paid by
the abutting owners $5200.
NEW MACHINERY
Waverly—The meat firm of
Rolfe & Ganther received the ma-
chinery necessary to make sausage
yesterday, and will be prepared to
serve the public with the home
made article in the future. They

necessary affidavits to procure the

burglarizing of Bingham's store at
Lockwood.
POLICE CALL CHANGED
Waverly—The various calls at
the police station have been chang-
ed, and have been the cause of
some wonderment to those residing
within hearing distancé of the
town hall. Oae stroke of the bell
was the police call formerly used,
but after the fire alarm system had
been installed a break in the line
was indicated by one stroke of the
bell, and in order to distinguish
between the two, the police call
was changed to two strokes. Noon
hour is now indicated by three
strokes.
KICKED IN HEAD
Waverly—While playing foots
ball on the Waverly high school
team at Athens yesterday Albert
Flynn was kicked on the back of
the head and rendered unconscious.
He was taken to a doctor's office,
and after a time revived and was
brought home to Waverly. He
has recovered from the injury, and
it is not likely that any bad results
will follow.
CANE CANCELLED
Waverly—A game of football
was scheduled to be played this
afternoon between the Athens and
Waverly teams at this place, but
was cancelled by the Athens man-
agement last night. No satisfac-
tory reason for this move was
given, and it is the opinion of the
Waverly aggregation thatit is a
case of cold feet.
WAVERLY DEFEATED
Waverly—The Waverly high
school football team went to Ath.
ens yesterday afternoon and played
against the high school team of
that town. The Athens team won
the game by a score of 11t0 0.

Williams
Chief cf police Van Order of Ith-
aca and Detectives J. J. Johnson
and T. B. Shaffer of this place se-
cured an autcmobile and taking
Ely with them, drove toward Wat«
kins. When near that place Ely
pointed to a large stone weighing
about 20 pounds, and told the of
ficers that they would find part of
the money there. The ston: was
rolled over and underneath it was
$717 in bills. The party returned
to Ithaca and underneath the plat-
form of the freight house, buried
in a shallow hole, was found the
remainder of the stolen money,
Te story of the finding of the
mor.cy, and of the ¢florts made by
the detectives to locate it, reads
more like a yellow covered novel
than actual facts. Ely was arrested
on Tuesday night at a hotel in
Watkins, where he had taken a
room. He at first denied all knowl
edge of the c:inic and told stories
to the cfficers which later were
proven to be falschocds. Ia order
to ascertain whether or not Ely
was telling the truth an automobile
was cccured and the detectives
drove over the entire route which
Ely said that he took when he 1:ft
Ithaca. The detectives visited
places where Ely <aid he had been,
but found that he had not been
telling the truth. Then the woman
who furnished him breakfast a few
hours after the robbery came to
the front and whea Ely was con.
fronted by her he broke down and
confessed.
When suspicion first pointed
toward him the officers were un-
able to locate him. Figally it was
learned that he had been keeping
company with a girl who lived a
short distance from Ithaca. De-
tective Shaffer communicated with
her by telephone. By impersonats
ing a friend of Ely’s he succeeded
in ascertaining from the girl that
Ely was in Watkins. He also
secured much more valuable infor-
mation concerning Ely from the
unsuspecting girl.
The recovery of the money is
due to the energy and quick witted
tactics employed by Detectives
Johnson and Shaffer, ably assisted
by Chief of Police Van Order of
Ithaca and Williard Kent, the dis
trict attorney of Tompkins county.
The local officers are loud in their
praise of the Tompkins county of-
ficials, who offered many valuable
suggestions and spent no end of
time in helping to locate the money
and the thief,
One interesting feature in cons
nection with the roll of bills which
was found near Watkins was the
fact that a gang of men were
working on the road abut soo
feet from the rock under which the
money was concealed. The men
were using a road scraper and had
the officers been a half hour later
the machine would have scraped
the money and stone into the road,
in which event it probably never
would have been found.
