Ceiled Flames Broke Out at an Early Hour This Morniog, and Were Probably of Incendiary Origin The Bruadage house, located on Thomas avenue, was practically ruined by fire which broke out at an early hour this morning in a most mysterious manner, and which is believed to have been the work of am incendiary. Shortly after three o'clock this morning, Mrs, Charles Donlio, wife of the proprietor, was awakened by the crying of her infant child. She arose to attend to the waats of the that the building was full of smoke, She aroused her husband and he made an investigation. He soon discovered that the fire originated in a back room on the second floor. The room had been used for storing purposes and when he opened the door a mass of flames and smoke poured through. Mr. Donlia im- mediately woke up the boarders and an alarm of fire was sent in. The firemen responded promptly, but a water plug at the corner of of Packer avenue and Thomas ave: nue failing caused considerable de- lay in getting ome of the streams to work. After considerable trouble, however, the firemen succeeded in getiing control of the fiames, but pot until the building had been completely water soaked and dam aged to such an extent that the loss is considered total. John Brundage, the owner of the hotel, who is also a practical car- penter, says that it will be cheaper to rebuild the hostelry than it will to repair it. The building was valued at $8,000 and Mr. Brundage carried $3,000 insurance. Mr, Donlin, the proprietor, estimates his loss at $1,500, partially covered by insurance, During the progress of the fire sneak thieves plied their trade and succeeded in obtaining a consider- able quantity of loot. A bureau drawer in Mr, Donlin’s bedroom was ransacked and $6500 taken; September has passed into histo- ry. October is here with its foggy momings and hoar frost The annual crop of foot ball hair is also at the bat with plenty of it on deck. the proud parents of a boy, The little visitor arrived yesterday at their pleasaat home on South El- mer avenue, and Al is passing the cigars. The ladies of Sayre and vicinity are invited to attend the millinery opening Wednesday and Thursday, The opea season for squirrels today, and many Sayre Baldwin, and the other to George Reynolds, were also secured by the thieves. A gold watch belonging to Charles Harding is missing and it is presumed that other articles will also be numbered among the missing when an inventory is taken. The fire, as stated above, is pre- sumed to have been of incendiary origin. The room in which it broke out is a considerable distance from the kitchen stove and it could not have caught from that. It is probable that the hotel will be re~ built. HENRY E DIXEY Heary E. The young men did not get up when a freight train approached, and as the speed of the train was too great to stop, the men were knocked down the embankement, and only a miracle seems to have prevented a fatality. A skylight in the rear of the building, which opens onto the back porch, was wide open, and a steam pipe under- neath the skylight was broken in two, Thoroughly satisfied that some one had entered the build- ing during the night, Mr, Catlin proceeded to investigate. Presently he discovered that the door to a closet under the stairs was fast- ened apparently from the iaslde. He succeeded in pushing his way in, however, and once on the inside he was somewhat startled to find a man, clad only in a shirt. The mao, or boy, rather, proved to be Elmer Jackson, for whom the po- lice have been searching the past three weeks. He had fastened the door from the iaside with a piece of copper wire. When asked by Mr, Catlin what he was doing in the building Jack son replied that he had been sleep ing. He stated that he had first helped himself to catables in the refrigerator on the back porch, and as he had no place to sleep during the night he concluded to go down through the skylight and sleep in the laundry. Mr. Catlin sent for Chief Walsh and on the latter's arrival he placed Jackson under arrest. weeks ago, taking with him a con- siderable sum of his father's monsy which he found in a bureau drawer while the members of the household were eating supper, At the time the police were notified and efforts were made to locate him, but they were unavailing until Sat- urday, when Chief Walsh was noti- fied that the young man had been seen in Sayre, The chief scarched the town but failed to find him until he was notified yesterday morning by Mr. Catlin that he had been apprehended in the laundry. Immediately after he was arrest- ed the elder Jackson was notified He went to police headquarters and was at first inclined to enter a charge against his son, but later determioed to give him one more chance, As Mr. Catlin also refused to make a complaint young Jack- son was released last night. He promised to go home and go to work. ————— AL ADAMS A SUICIDE Al Adams, the notorious New York policy king, who a little more than a year ago completed a term in Sing Sing, committed suicide this morning in his hotel near New York.
