S— : And Because One of the Ilk Took Exceptions He Was Roughly Handled. - According to reports which come from Canton there must have been a high old tios€ in that place yesterday during the progress ot the Five County Firemen's Associ- ation parade, and a well known Sayre sport is alleged to have narrowly escaped lynching at the hands of an infuriated mob. The trouble is said to have arisen from the fact that several gambling lay outs were being run opealy and the firemen proposed to put them out of business, A long rope was secured and with several husky firemen on each end the dead cinch gambling deviscs were quickly put out of business, The manner in which the gam. blers were put out of business didn't meet with the approval of the Sayre sport and he mounted the porch of a hotel and told the crowd so. Then the rope did business again. This time it was wound several times around the sport's body and he was dragged from the porch of the hotel through the streets. A crowd of four or five hundred people gather- ed and cries of “lynch him,” “hang him,” were heard on all sides. The men holding the rope started for a telephoue pole, but before they could reach it the police assisted by citizens succeed- ed in dispersing the crowd and re- leasing the sport from his perilous position, It is said that he was taken to one of the hose rooms where he was carefully guarded until he could be placed on board a train and sent to Sayre, The affair is said to have caused great excitement in the usually quiet town of Canton.
