For weeks the horsemen in this valley have been talking “hoss” and “hoss” racing until those who are interested in the sport have nearly fainted from exhaustion. Races have been pulled off on paper, and the wads of money which have been wagered on these mythical events had it been in the posession of one individual that in dividual would be as rich as Croe sus, Until now, however, it has simply been a matter of “hot air” among owners of steeds that have an idea that the latter can go along some. Bombast and “wind” has now got to take the “23" route, and at last lovers of the sport are to witness a race that will be worth mortgaging a farm to see. Everybody hereabouts knows Dr.Crawford, the giant veterinarian of Tioga Point, and they also know that he is a great lover of horseflesh. In fact the Doctor is the sole owner and proprietor of an animal that the Doctor says can “go along some.” “Honest Dan" is the name of this nimble stepper, and the Doctor is willing to put up his hard earned simeleons that his “hoss” can beat anything in its class, Like the Doctor, George Fice, the genial brawny fisted Athens constable, is well known in this section, and he, too, has an equine named “The Ferret,” which he says never had anything but first money. Mr. Fice and Dr. Craw ford met the other evening and in- dulged in a little “hoss"” argument, interspersed with many allegations by both as to the relative merits of their respective animals, To settle the whole matter, however, a race was arranged The Doctor wagers Mr. Fice $15 that his horse can win in the finish, while Mr. Fice is willing to raise him $10 and to stake $25 on the ability of his animal, The money was produced and placed in the hands of John Hill, who will keep it in his possession until alter the argument has been settled on the Valley Driving Park association's track .on Saturday afternoon next. The rooms are very commodious and pleasantly located but the parlor was never furnished and now it is the intention of the members to put in some furniture, fit up the rooms, and thereby make it a more attractive place, The interest of the members has lagged somewhat at times and it is hoped that this move will instill greater interest and increase the member ship, DEATH AT ATHENS “Mrs John Wheatley went to Forksville yesterday, Miss Gertrude MacDonald spent Sunday at Chemung; J. ESCAPED FROM JAIL An officer from Ithaca spent last night io Sayre looking for two men who had escaped from the jail in that place. Both were charged with minor offenses, but they des sired their liberty, and succeeded in obtaining it. Their clothes had been taken from them when they entered the jail, and when they took “French leave” they were clad only in their underwear. From this fact the officials at the jail were of the opinion that it would be an easy ‘matter to apprehend them, but thus far no trace of their Dan Clarey returned this morn: ing from Sylvan Beach, where he has been enjoying a short outing Mrs. Clarey, who accompanied him, will remain at the Beach for several days.
