He Wanted to Play But Hollow-
¢d When He Was Beaten at
His Own Game.
Yesterday afternoon a ‘group of
men were shaking dice whea a
young fellow coming by noticed
the game and asked if he might
get into it. He appeared to be all
right and all expressed their
willingness and he took his place
at the table. He did not appear to
like the looks of the small dice
that were being used however and
brushed them out of the way, at
the same time substituting some
larger ones that he drew from his
pocket. This caused some of the
players to be rather suspicious
and they nearly all withdrew. One
man who chanced to bé nedr
noticed the dice and concluding
that they were loaded decided to
take a hand in the game,
The stranger seemed pleased
with the looks of things, but ins
stead of winning he lost steadily
until he was out §1200 He left,
and going to a justice, claimed that
he had been cheated and wanted
his money back. The justice stated
that he would issue a warrant for
the arrest of the responsible parties
unless the matter was settled by 10
o'clock this morning. The money
was handed over, the sport was
satisfied, and as a result no one has
been locked up.
T0 DELIVER SPEECH
__ NEXT WEDNESDAY NIGHT
The Socialist local met last night
at the Howard Elmer hose house
on Maple street. A very spirited
discussion on the relative merits of
industrial co-operation, state social-
ism and state competition with
private enterprise was discussed
somewhat at length. The advo-
cates of cach method desired to
attain the same end, but differed
with regard to the practicability of
the method of the others.
Final arrangements were made
for the speech which will be deliv~
ered at the hose house next Wed-
nesday, Aug. 8, by S. Fieldman
of New York city. He is one of
the best speakers of the Socialistic
organization, and an interesting
discussion is assured. A general
invitation to attend is extended to
all, and anyone is urged to ask any
question that he sees fit,

“A CONBOY'S ROMANCE”
Bad weather served to keep
many away from the park last
night, although the crowd was
larger than the hight before. Those
who did attend were well repaid
for braving the rain, for “Dora
Thorne” ia the haads of the Ben.
nett-Moulton proved a most pleas-
ing little play, and it is bound to
draw out the crowds tonight at its
last presentation. Next week the
company will open with “A Cow-
boy's Romance,” a new play from
the pea of Justin Adams, “The
Virginian,” “The Squaw Man,” and
“The Girl from the Golden West,"
set a standard for melodrama, de~
picting life in the west that had
never been attained before ; this
Mr. Adams has tried to emulate in
writing the cowboy’s romance, and
the result is a clean, wholesome
drzma, with plenty of western
atmosphere and chock full of com-
edy, the trial scene of the third act
being one of the funniest scenes
ever staged. The company is well
cast and several hits will be scored.
The specialties will all be changed
and new motion pictures shown.
