An old man, who claimed to be a veteran of '61 and '62, was gathered in by the police yesterday afternoon on a charge of drunken- ness, He was allowed his liberty later, The state highway department is now advertising for bids for the coastruction of almost three miles of road in Wells township, this county, which when built will be the first state road in the county. ED AT He Had Been in a Helplesss Con} dition for Many Months Heary Merritt Peppard, aged 56 years, died at his home, No, 404 Maple street, last night at nine o'clock, after a“ lingering illness. For geveral months he had been confined to his home in a helpless due to paralysis. The deceased was a native of the town of Chemung, Chemung county, N. Y_, and until a few years ago be conducted 3 farm near the village of Chemung. He came to Sayré and went to work in the shops until ill health forced him to quit. He was a most highly respected citizen and gained a host of friends in this place. He is survived by his wife and one son, Charles M. Peppard, of Sayre. He is also sur- vived by four brothers, Lewis, Isaac, George and Tell, all of Che- mung. Short prayer service will be held from his late home tomorrow morning after which the remains will be taken to Chemung for burial. CONTRACTS EXECUTED The contracts between the Les high Valley Railroad Company and Bradford county, and the rail- road company and Wysox town. ship, made nearly a month ago and signed by the commissioners of the county and the township, have been executed by the officers of the railroad company. The eontract with the commissioners of Bradford county provides for the payment of $20,000 to the county by fhe rail- road company, ptovided the pro- posed James street bridge across the Susquehanna river is completed within five years, Of this sum $1,500 is to be paid for the privi lege of crossing the causeway ap- proach to the covered bridge at Towanda with an overhead struc ture and lowering the highway to give at least 13 feet in the clear. The contract with the Wysox township commissioners disposes of the changes in the highway east of the river.
