May 7. — The battleship Hhode Island is ashore on York shotl, in Chesapeake Lay. While proceeding from Boston for Yorktown for target practice the big ship went aground, and the last heard of her was to the effect that id was bard and fast The warship In attempting i. enter York river before daybreak got out of the channel, it Is sald, by the pliot loging his bearings in misty weather. While the big ship is fb no Immediate danger, there is some uneasiness felt for her safety should a sudden severe blow come on. Members of the Virginia Pilots’ asso- ciation say the ship Is fn a serious con- dition. Her plight was made known to this navy yard by wireless telegraph as soon as her commanding officer, Cap- tain Harriogton, realized that she could not be worked off the sandbar with bier own euglines, For fear of injuring the splendid ves- sel he decided to awalt the arrival of assistance, The uaval tugs Hercules, Uncas and Mohawk were at once rush- ed from the navy yard. These power- ful vessels will pull on the grounded warship at high tide, aud it ia believed that she will be floated without Injury. The Rbode Island was on her way from Bostou to Yorktown to test her grest guns, The Rbode Island went ashore at pearly bigh water, drawing about twenty-four feet. In view of the presence on the scene of four powerful tugs and the fact that the scene of the grounding Is in- side of the bay and in smooth water, naval officials feel that the Rhode 1s land will get off without harm, though {t may be necessary to lighten her by taking off some coal and heavy stores. A court of Inquiry will be appointed to ascertain the cause of the accident and report whether further action stiould be taken against any one who may be responsible. Higgins Has President's 0. K.
