Mr. Hedrick gave a com- plete history of the order of Eagles from the time it was first organized down to the present day. He took occasion to speak in the most flat- tering terms of the locidl organiza- tion and of the rapid strides it had made since its formation more than a year ago. He also complimented the degree team for the excellent manner in which the work of installing the Towanda Aerie was pérforincd. A large number of can- didates were to have been initiated last night but on account of the visit to Towanda the night previous the initiatory ceremonies were postponed until the next meeting. Twenty applications for member- ship were received. AGED WOMAN DEAD Miss .Sarah Stevens died last night at 11 o'clock at the home of her neice, Mrs. W. B. Weeks, of No. 101 North East street. Death was due to stomach trouble. The deceased would have been 80 years old on the second of next month, and had resided with her neice for the past tea years. She was born at Standing Stone, and was a woman of estimable charac ter. She is survived by one brother, Smith Stevens of Sayre, and two sisters, Mrs. E. M. Bishop of Boston, and Mrs. Leonard Ir- vine of this place. Two neices, one of whom resides at Towanda, and the other in Cleveland, Ohio, also survive. The funeral arrange- ments which are in charge of Grumme's undertaking establish- ment, will be anmbunced later. CONTRACTOR DOLAN HERE Contractor John F. Dolan, who did the excavating for the new Le phigh Valley shops at this place, was a Sayre visitor yesterday, and left for Towanda this morning where he will look over the ground pre- paratory to commencing work on the contract which he has secured in connection with the-erection of a new bridge and a change of the main line at that place. Mr. Dolan was accompanied in Sayre by Frank S. Higgins, formerly a book keeper for Mutchler & Sons, who also did a large amount of contract work on the new shops here, Mr. Higgins is now employed by Dolan and will do the time keeping at To- wanda, DASTARDLY DEED The timely discovery, yesterday morning, by a train crew of a stone wedged tightly between the rails of a switch on the mountain cutoff of the Lehigh Valley probably prevented an eastbound freight train from meeting with-a serious wreck, The crew was going toward Coxton when they discov- ered the stone, which had the Were Out oge Day but Dida’t Get Their Raise The track foremen employed on the Auburn & Ithaca and Lehigh & New York branches of the Le high Valley went out on a strike on Monday last having as their cause that “the pay ‘was too small” and demanding a raise from $45 a month to $50 Ia all there were 53 foremen who refused to see that the various section gangs under their control drove spikes and tamped ties, but 49 of the 53 were ready to resume work on Tuesday morning. The men, however, did not win their ‘point. The remaining four men obtained work elsewhere agd are therefore no longer in the service of the Le high Valley. In just what manner the 49 men were settled with is not known, as the officials of the road will not give out any infor= mation. It is said, however, that they did not receive the wages asked for. Se ——p TOWANDA. NINSTRELS The Towanda Minstrels will ap pear at Hale's Opera House, To wanda, on Tuesday evening, April 17, for the benefit of the Towanda High School Athletic Association. Those in charge of the entertain ment promise a finished, up to date minstrel performance. There will be a double ring of 40 of the best male singers in Towanda, with six end men and two premiers. Three names were proposed for member- ship, The lodge has decided not to go to Canton on April 21st, the occa- sion being the 89th anniversary of the founding of the order, The installation of officers will occur on April 12 and all Odd Fellows are earnestly requested to be present. The members of the degree team will meet for drill on Monday even- ing. Preparations are being made to work the first degree and all the members of the team are requested to be on hand promptly. TRAIN RIDER INJURED Otto Vanhuff, a young man about 18 years of age, who claims to reside at Covert, N. Y, met with a painful accident in the Le- high yards at this place about 11 o'clock this forenoon. Vanhuff was beating his way over the Le- high going cast, and when the freight train on which he was rid- ing reached Sayre, he had occasion to jump ofl. In landing his right foot caught in a frog and wrenched so badly as to cause a compound fracture of the ankle joint. The ambulance was summoned and he The Wagon Was Demolished but the Man and Horse Escaped Unburt er John Wheatley, the well kaown Lehigh Valley engineer, while out driving last night was run isto by a trolley car, escaping himself, but the wagon in which he was seated is a wreck. The accident occurred between Athens and Sayre shortly after 6 o'clock. Mr. Wheatley was crossing the trolley fracks and had waited for oné of the northbound cars to pass. to the tracks he did not notice a second car closely following the first one. The second car struck the wagon before the motorman could stop. Mr. Wheatley was thrown from the vehicle but was not in- jured. The wagon, however, was badly smashed. LOCAL NENTION Mrs. M. C.
