Where the gem went to he never kaew:. Today, however, he received a let- ter in a woman's handwriting, evi- dently disguised, in which the writer stated that she had stolen the diamond from Rogers’ house on Desmond street. She also stated that she had sent the dia mond to Chief of Police Walsh, with instructions to turn it over to its owner. When seen today Chief Walsh strenuously denied having received the gem, and after making an investigation of the circumstan- ces surrounding the disappearance of the ring, and also reading the letter received by Mr. Rogers to~ day he pronounced, the whole case a hoax. He says that the woman is playing some sort of a shrewd game but he is as yet unable to tell what it is. A new edict has been promulgated by the powers that be and the operator at the switchboard will no longer listen to your request, “give me Josiah Smith's residence, please?” but you must give the number in plain English terms. Herctofore it has been the invariable custom to call the party you wanted by giving the name, but the telephone managers will no longer stand for this method as it is claimed that the numbers in the telephone book are expressly for this purpose and that by calling in this manner the work at the switchboard is greatly facilitated. From the standpoint of the telephone management the rule is a good one, but the patrons of the system have found it a very convenient method to tell the cen tral operator the name of the per- son wanted, thus obviating the ne- cessity ot searching for a telephone book which has either been mislaid or perhaps may not contain the number of the party desired. CHAMPION STOCK COMPANY The clever and versatile actor, Charles K. Champlin, supported by an excellent company, will be at the Loomis next Thursday after- noon and night, playing two of his strongest plays, “A Wife's Decep- tion” in the afternoon, and “The Belle of Richmond” at night. Mr Champlin is everywhere recog nized as more than an ordinarily competent repertoire actor, and has had the sound judgment to furnish himself with a supporting company able to sustain the standard which he himself has definitely estab- lished. The time between the acts will be entertainingly filled with high class specialties. “LEGION HOME GUARD" The Legion Home Guard is the name of a neat little publication which has made its appearance in the interests of the National Pro~ tective Legion. Among the many interesting matters in the new paper is complete information con- cerning a “term policy,” which the Legion is now issuing. The new policy is of equal value in the event of death as the other policies, but they cost less. Persons desiring to take advantage of an excellent protection should get a copy of the Legion Home Guard and read the conditions TYPHOID CASES Frank Jennings of 410 Steven: son street is ill of typhoid fever The case of Mr. Jennings is the 1outh to be reported to the local health authorities since March 26, 1905.
