Hardly Sufficient to Safely
of Sayre
In view of the burglaries and
petty thievery that has been going
on in Sayre recently it has been
suggested that the council should
provide another police officer to do
duty nights, One policeman in
the business part of the town itis
claimed, is hardly sufficient to in-
sure fair protection against midnight
maurauders and desperadoes
Under present conditions Officer
Voegel covers the business section
including the territory in the First
ward on the cast side of the Lehigh
tracks. His duties require him to
go to the hose house on Packer
avenue and report each hour during
the night to the central telephone
station. [It is an easy matter under
there conditions for crooks and
theives to keep the officer located
at most every hour of the night,
whereas, if there were two men
patrolling the same territory, there
would be less opportunity for
cracksmen to do their work. While
the Record is not willing to add
unnecessary taxation to the taxable
inhabitants of the borough it never-
theless beleives that this is a ques-
tion which should be discussed by
the borough council.
ENA BUNTING
It has been said about Miss Em-
ma Bunting, who is to appear at
the Loomis next week, that no one
has ever seen this charming little
lady who did not have a desire to
do so again. Her piquant face,
fascinating manner and perceptible
love of her art, demonstrated by
the manner in which she essays her
different roles, all leave an everlast-
ing and favorable impression. Miss
Bunting has the support this season
of one of the strongest acting com-
panies ever seen at popular prices.
The scenic and electrical effects
carried by this company are said
to eclipse anything ever seen in
repertoire, the construction of both
having had the personal supers
vision of Mr. Earl Burgess. The
specialties are exceedingly high
class, among them being Herbert
P. Powers, the popular comedian,
Al. Rayno's troop of bull dogs,
the greatest animal act in America;
Davis & Walker, colored entertain-
acrobatic evolutions. Ladies’ 15¢
tickets have been issued for Mon
day evening. Matinees will be
given on Thursday and Saturday
FUNERAL TOMORROW

who died in Granville, this county,
on Thursday, were brought to the
home of his mother, Mrs. Valena

DED THS
The Well Known Lehigh En-
| gineer
Mrs. Emma Knapp, wife ol
| Edward W. Knapp, the well known
| Lehigh Valley engineer of No. 412
West Lockhart street, expired this
moming about five o'clock after a
week's illness, Death was due to
acute gastritis. The deceased was
38 years old and is survived by her
husband and four children. She
had resided in Sayre for several
| years and was held in high esteem
by all who knew her, and her death
will be generally regretted. The
arrangements for the funeral are in
charge of J]. W. Grumme's under
taking establishment and they will
'be announced later.
ENCNE KILED TWO COWS
Train number 8 on the Lehigh
| Valley, which passes through Sayre
lat 8.40 each morning struck and
{killed two cows near Pittston Junc
[tion yesterday morning. The sec-
tion where the accident occurred
lis known among railroad men as
“the slaughter house.” There are
no fences in the immediate country
surrounding the tracks and many
|of the miners keep a goat or cow
| The animals manage to saunter on
|the Lehigh tracks about the time
trains are due, and then there is an
increase of mortality rate in the
animal kingdom

THE “HOT AIR ARTIST”
The telepraphic réports sent out
from Sayre concerning the alleged
letter from the “Black Hand" re-
ceived by lke Samuels, the Lock-
hart street jeweler, are making their
appearance in the papers published
in surrounding towns. The reports
are in abbreviated form and contain
placed under arrest and that when
searched articles of a similar pature
{were found upon his person
Speaking of “hot air” shooters,
what do you think of this for a
hberal dispensation of super-heated
atmosphere.
LEFT FOR THE WEST
Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Cary left this
morning for Denver, Colorado, and
upon their arrival at that place they
will determine upon some point in
hat section in which to locate per-
manently. As heretofore stated in
these columns Mr. and Mrs. Carey
have gone to the western country
| hoping that the climate will be of
{great benefit to Mrs. Cary. Mr.
and Mrs Cary's many friends in
Sayre exceedingly regret the neces-
sity of their leaving Sayre but at
the same time will wish them well
wherever they may be.

and it is stated that similar petitions |
have been sent to every city of
importance in the state,
Executive clemency is Patrick's
last chance. For nearly six years
Patrick has fought for his life in the
courts, and each decision has been
against him. Whether he can in-
duce Governor Higgins to interfere
in his behalf remains to be seen. |
; Guilty or innocent, Patrick has put |
up a great fight and his case will,
go down in history as a fine exam |
ple of the manner in which the|
machinery of the law may be used |
to retard the ends of justice.
