Prominent Visitor
Athens—Mrs. Louise S. Com-
stock and her daughter Sarah of |
New York city, came to Athens
last might on the late train and will
remain for a time to greet former
Mrs Comstock was one
of the Saltmarsh family, who were
among the most prominent in the
early social circles of this valley
Her husband, Walter Comstock,
was a son of Charles Comstock,
and together they were associated |
in the commercial business of the
town for a long period of years
Walter Comstock, (Col. Dick, as!
we used to call him), was one of
the leading spirits of Athens socie-
ty up to the time he went west.
They have resided in Kansas City
and San Francisco but now have
their home in New York city.
The daughter Sarah is prominent
in literary work, and has had posi-
tions on the San Francisco Call
and New York papers. The fam-
ily are related to the Hopkins who
were among the pioneers in the |
valley. Mrs. Comstock tells us
in
friends.

distinguished Swedish
gentleman, who fortunately spoke
English.” It did not take long to
make acquaintance, and then: ‘I
too have been in America,’ said
the Swede, 1862, '63-'647 1
army, wounded at
Bethesda Church, captured and a
prisoner at Libby Prison, and here
is a useless shoulder and arm to
remind me of those days.’
“You can imagine the interest of
that meeting. Farther inquiry
brought out the fact that Major
Axel Leatz was commissioned by
Gov. Horatio Seymour of New
York a lieutenant the Fifth
N.Y. Vol. (Duryea’s Zauaves,)
was promoted and served through
most of the war, and best of all
that he cherishes today a love for

leave of absence to join the Union
