Baseball at 1{a Beat. PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 10—The Gi ants won the first game of the world's serias with the Athletics here amid a scene of enthusiasin pever before equaled in this City. More than 25000 persons gone baseball mad cheered wildly, smashed each other's bats aud, storming the field, carried the victorl- ous players to lhe clubbouse on their shoulders. The vanquished Athletics put up a plucky fight and were not deserted by their friends. Fully 5,000 persons gath- ered about the bench of the “broad brims” and, refusing to let them move, cheervd and shouted to them words of good cheer for almost half au hour. It was a baseball game loug to be fe membered ou account of sterling qual- iy In every position. Every man play- er as If bis life depended upon the re- sult. The opposing pitchers—those two college wen, Mathewson and Plank— bad ao even Hght for it for four in- pings. The heavy hitters were mowed down In regular order, Nothing ap peared too difficult for the men behind them to pull from the alr or smother on the ground. The Athletics could not bit New York's Matty. That explains the de feat of the Quaker team. Four Umes during the nine bitterly coufested lu- pings Mack's wen hit the ball safely. But nothing could they do when men were on bases and hits meant runs. Then it was that Matty's drop became utterly elusive and the expectant hit- tars smashed the air, The Athletics got enough men on bases and Lad plenty of opportunities to drive In russ, but they could wot do ft. Plank was effective also, but he was pot the master of the situation that Matty was. Ia the Ath lunlog Plank became net- tied at Sheridan's decision on balls sod strikes and lost his temper. That was fats! to him, for he was hit for singles by Matty aud Donlin, gave Mc- a base on balls and was ham- for a deuble by Mertes.
