Williamsport, Pa Lightning whieh
struck the house of William Bowers
in Ranchtown, near here played some
remarkable pranks. Not only did it
upset tables and chairs, but it stripped
the clothing from a woman without
injuring her. Miss Campbell, of Piri
adelphis. who was visiting the Bowers
and was silting near the atove on the

the house, was the victim of this odd
reak. As the bolt crashed through
the roof she lost consciousness for
# moment, and when she recovered she
found all het clothing lying in a smol-

Mrs. Burrell Vasbinder has re-
turned to her home at Addison
after a pleasant visit at the home
of her brother, George Vasbinder
and family on Fulton street.
George Vincent, professor in the
University of Chicago was a guest
of Waverly friends last night en
route to Chicago. The professor
is a son of Bishop Vincent of the
Methodist church.
Piano Instruction
Miss Nellie Comfort is located
in Sayre and is prepared to give
piaro lessons. Miss Comfort has
the best of references, onc of which
it the following, from Prof H. E
Cogswell, a well known musical
directer, formerly of the Mansfield
conservatory.

$200 Damage
Waverly—A truck loaded with
goods for shipment at the D. LL. &
W. station this morning was struck
by an incoming train which badly
demolished both the goods and
truck. A typewriter was among
the goods that were ruined. Its
estimated that damage to the
amount of $200 was caused.

Mary Elizabeth Crans
Waverly—Mrs. Mary Elizabeth
Crans died after a painful illness of
about two months, at her home,
141 Chemung stieet, at about 5:30
o'clock last evening, aged 49 years
and nine months. Immediate cause
of herdeath was Bright's disease.
Deceased was born at Wysox,
Bradford county, and removed with
her parents to Athens where she
resided until about fourteen years
ago when she moved to this city.
She was a devout member of thg |
Episcopal church and was at all |
times trying to do something to!
She was also a member of the L. 5,
B.of LL. F, an organization com-
posed of ladies at Sayre.
The husband of deceased died
eighteen years ago today and since
that time Mrs. Crans has acted in
the capacity of private nurse.
The surviving members of the
immediate family of the deceased
are a son, Harry Crans, an engi-
neer on Lehigh Valley Railroad,
and one daughter, Mrs. Arthur
Day, both residents of this city
One brother, John Eddy, of Wa-
verly, and one sister, Mrs. Sherman
Packard of Bay City, Mich,
mourn her death.
A woman beloved by a large
circle of friends, her death is today
mourned not only by friends in
this place but throughout Bradford
county where she had so long re-
sided
Funeral services will be held
from the house tomorrow afternoon
at 2 o'clock, the Rev. H. W. Cry-
denwise officiating, burial at Tioga
Point cemetery.

Memorial Service
Waverly—A good attendance
was present at the memorial serv-
ice conducted by Walter C. Hull
Post, GAR, last evening. At the
close of the business session a brief
biography of the late Gen. Blackmar,
commander in chief of the G A.
R, was read together with, an
account of the funeral service held
in Boston, also a sketch of the life
of the late Colonel E. C. Parkinson
of Rochester, who at the time of
his death was senior vice com-
mander of the department of New
York, G. A. R. Next meeting will
be held October 11, at which time
several short talks on the newly
elected commander-in-chief Cor-
poral Tanner will be delivered.
Choral Union Meeting
Waverly—A meeting of those
interested in forming a Choral
Union was held at the Baptist
church last evening. A large
number was present. A Music
Committee and a Committee on
Permanent Organization was ap-
pointed, The matter of a Director
was left open until the permanent
organization is effected,
Guns for Africans,
An article In a recent number of
the Birmingham (England) Mall
states that a factory in that city Is
turning out weekly about 1,200 flint-
lock muskets, and that a large nam-
ber of this antiquated firearm are also
made at Liege Belgium. These guns
are sent to Central and East Africa
for use by the natives, to whom the
possession of modern firearms Is de
nied by statute,
