The Dail v Review. Towanda, Pa., Wednesday, Nov. 30, 1881. BOITOHB . S. W. ALVOKD. NOBLE N.ALVORD "Jit.tiy 25 een per- Montk. Try II! Don't fail to go to JOHN SULLIVAN'S on Bridge street, for the best five cent cigar. The M. E. Church Sociable will meet Wednesday evening, at the house of JOHN WILBOK, on Main Street, above Chestnut. The expression "ever so much obliged," so commonly used by society, means, "Thanks, I expected you to do this thing and if you lirdn't done it you would have been a mean beast." A strong friend of St Jaeob's Oil is H. T. Duncan, Esq., of the Lexington iKy.)Press. He says: A short time sinee St. Jabobs Oil was prescribed in my own family by a regu lar physician, and it was used with the most satisfactory results, as usual. Some lady of this place should take the agency for that popular and useful book, "practical House-keeping," issued by Buck eye Publishing Co., Minneapolis, Minn. Ev ery housekeeper needs a copy. Address the publishers for terms. Commissions large. There is a report, which is generally ac cepted, that the Erie has purchased the Tio ga Railroad and Bloss mines. Vandcrbilt lias had his eve on the mines and the Lacka wanna road, but the Erie has obtained the majority of the stock by purchase of F. N. DRAKE. Prof. DANNKLLK will proceed with his classes in the Means Hall. Lessons every Thursday at 4 1-2 and 7 1-2 o'clock, for begin ners, and from 8 1-2 till 11, an assembly for all. Those not pupils, 50c per couple to the assemblies. lam prepared to give the same unprecedented satisfaction in my teaching that 1 did last year. Towanda abounds in evidences of my superior skill as a teacher. When there is a lack of warm clothing there is also a drain from the vital energies which tends to break down the health, and this sometimes takes place when the vict'ni has such a good constitution and such excel lent health, as to be able to bear with impu nity almost any neglect and exposure. I know of women who wear thin cotton stock ings all winter, and who say that they do not need anything warmer in-doors, hut these are not healthy women, and I doubt if then supposed "feelings" correctly indicate the body's needs. Those who dislike the feeling of wool in contact with the skin (and I think that this is much according to habit or use*, can wear a thin pair of cotton stockings un der woollen ones, which is better for warmth than two pair of cotton stockings. Nourishing Food, Fare Air, Plentiful Sleepy and Happy Exercise, are all essen tial to perfect health. Nutritious food is ne cessary for good blood, and this cannot be pure, unless clean, fresh air be bountifully supplied. Growth and repair cannot go on properly without the entire rest of healthy, unforced sleep, and exercise of both body and brain is necessary to the health and strength of each.— American Agriculturist, for December. When one of the Erie trains going west stopped at Greenwood in Orange county, last Friday evening. Engineer SAMUEL WALKER went out to oil his locomotive. When he got to the head of the engine he discovered a woman lying on the forward bumpber. close under the boiler head, sensi ble, moaning and talking about her children. Engineer WALKER was considerably surpris ed when he heard tiie woman's story. She g..id her name was MARGARET, wife of JOHN CROI.Y; that she lived on Spring street, Pat erson; that she had been out drinking witli a friend, and that in crossing the track was picked up by the engine. It thus appeared that the woman .had rode twenty-seven or twenty-eight miles in this position, Ileres cipe from instant death when she was struck by the locomotive was remarkable, but the wonder is increased that she could ride so far, in a partialiy insensible and drunken condition, without rolling off the engine. The woman was taken to Munro, where, on ex amination it was ascertained that she was only slightly injured, the wounds consisting of scalp cuts and bruises mainly about the head. She had suffered more from the in tense cold than from any other cause. Mr. OTTARBON, the upholsterer, is putting some very nice goods in just now for the Holidays. LADIES BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION.—The Ladies Benevolent Association will meet on Wednesday afternoon, November 30th, at the usual place. The commencement of our winter's work has been delayed this vear by an empty trea sury and lack of material for clothing. So it lias been necessary to defer our meeting un til after the Thanksgiving collections, in order to ascertain whether the people of Towaiula wish to continue this work of charity or not. During the ten years of its existence this society has been generously sustained and has done an amount of good that we cannot mea sure; but last spring our appeal for funds was only responded to by one donation than did not eome from working members of the Association; and it is feared that a misappre hension exists in regard to the need of this organization since tlie opening of the County House. Indeed it lias been frequently re marked: "We will not need the Benevolent Society when we have the Poor House." But our object and work have l *"in to sup port paupers, only to render temporary as sistance to those who are able and willing to support themselves—but who by sickness or other misfortune are placed in circumstances where a little timelv aid from those more for tunate will alleviate their suffering, and give courage to some in a dark hour. The greatest care is always used in giving aid and rarely have our visitors been impos ed upon, and with such delicacy and tact have our ladies worked, that sometimes eve the recipients have never known from what source the much needed help came. Surely the people of Towtnda will never allow this good work to die for the lack of funds! "He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again." We can ask no bet ter security; let us make the investment, liy order of PUKSIDKNT OF ASSOCIATION. BUSINESS LOCALS.
