The peaceful arraignment of the mis erable Guiteau was better assured than it would have been bad it been necessary to produce him in public when his victim lay suffering and slowly dying. The habitual self-restraint and respect for laws in our older communities will ordi narily insure a fair trial to any criminal, however depraved or desperate. For the credit of our institutions, which have gained a new title to the world's wonder and respect, by the manner in which the government was conducted without a head throughout the summer, and passed quietly into new hands upon the death of the President, it is necessary that the trial and punishment of the assassin should be equally characteristic of what is best in our government. A prompt and fair trill, and legal punishment, should end the tragedy. W raugell Land lately taken possession of by Lieut. Hooper in the name of the United States, is a large, uninhabited re giou in the Arctic Ocean, northwest of Behring Strait, with its southeast ex tremity in latitude 70 deg. 40 min. N., longitude 178 deg. 51 min. W. Ilooper has christened it "New Columbia/' So little is known of it that navigators are In doubt whether to call it an island or an extension of the main land. It is thought that valuable minerals will be found in the frozen soil. Some one lias been hunting up the bur ial places of the eighteen dead presidents and finds them widely scattered. Wash ington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and Tyler are burled in different parts of Virginia; the two Adams in in Massachu setts; Jackson, Polk and Johnson in Tennessee; Van Burcn and Fillmore in New York; Harrison in Indiana; Taylor in Louisiana; Pierce in New Hampshire; Buchanan in Pennsylvania; Lincoln in ll l'uoi.s and Garlield in Ohio. Would-be railroad train robbers are easily discomfited by a little coolness and bravery. A gang who intended "going through" a train at Sterling, 111., chang ed their minds when the conductor drew a revolver and ordered them to throw up their bauds. They obeyed orders prompt ly and were marched of! to jail by brake men. This is In vivid contrast with re cent conduct by some Missouri and Ar kansas trainmen under similar circum stances. The system of choosing Mormon mis sionaries for Europe is peculiar. All over Utah there are organizations, num bering seventy men each, and known as quorums. Over them all is an executive body of seven members. When a call for missionaries is issued by the head of the church the presidents of the quorums designate the men to go The mission aries so designated never refuse to obey orders. They don't dare.
