The following has been issued : By the President of the United Slates of America, Proclamation: WHEREAS, In His inscrutable wisdom, it has pleased God to remove from us the illustrious head of the Nation, James A. Garfield, late President of the United States; and WHEREAS, It is fitting that the deep grief which lills all hearts should mani fest itself with one accord toward th e Throne of Infinite Grace and that we should bow before the Almighty and seek from Him that consolation in our alllic tion and that, sanctification of our loss which he is able and willing to vouchsafe. Now, therefore, in obedience to sacred duty and in accordance with the desire of the people, I, Chester A. Arthur, Presi dent of the United States of America, do hereby appoint Monday next, the 26th day af September, ou which day the re mains of our honored and beloved dead will be consigned to their last resting place ou earth, to be observed throughout the United States as a day of humiliation and mourning. And L earnestly recom mend that all the people assemble on that day in their respective places of di vine worship, there to render alike their tribute of sorrowful submission to the will of Almighty God and of reverence and love for the memory and character of our late Chief Magistrate. In witness whereof 1 have hereunto set my hand and caused the great seal of the United States to be affixed. Governor Hoyt has issued the follow-') ing proclamation: In the name and by the authority of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania: The chastening hand of God lias been heavily laid upon the nation and a belov ed and honored Chief Magistrate lias been removed by death in the beginning of an official career which promised to usher in an era of unexampled peace, prosperity and good will. The hearts of the people are bowed with sorrow for this great loss and they will, with sym pathy for the bereaved wife and orphaned i children, accept the duty of humble sub mission to the decree of the Buler of the universe, and in order that the occasion upon which fitting public respect is being paid to the memory of James Abram Gar field, late President of the United States, may lead us to supplicate divine grace as well as for recognition of -divine sover eignty, I, Henry M. Hoyt, Governor of the.Common wealth of Pennsylvania, do appoint Monday next as a day of fasting aand prayer, and recommend the people of the State to suspend all secular occu pations and assemble themselves togeth er in their respective places of worship on that day to unite in prayers to Al mighty God for the welfare of the nation and its ruler, and that the grief of those who mourn may be comforted. Whereas matters of interest to the United States insist that the Senate should be convened at an early day to re ceive and act on such communications as may be made to it ou the part of the Ex ecutive— Now, therefore, I, Chester A. Arthur, President of the United States, have con sidered it to be my duty to issue this my proclamation, declaring that an extraor dinary occasion requires that the Senate of the United States convene for the transaction of business at the Capitol in the city of Washington, 011 Monday, the 10th day of October next, at noon of that daj'; of which all at that time entitled to act as members of that body, are hereby required to take notice. Pursuant to a call of the Burgess, a meet ing of the Borough Council was held on Friday evening the 23d inst., to take action on the proclamation of the President of the United States, relating to the appointment of Mon day next to be observed as a day of humilia tion and mourning, on which day the remains of our late beloved Chief Magistrate will be consigned to their last earthly resting place. Members present—Burgass Alger, Frost, Gordon, Ilolcomb, Kcclc'r and Spalding. Councilman Ilolcomb submitted the follow ing resolutions, which, on motion of Council man Spalding, were unanimously adopted: WIIKUKAS.
