Here is a new plan for raising funds at church sociables: The ladies write their name and weight on slips of paper and the gentle men drawing the slips each taking the lady whose name he has drawn to supper, and paying half a cent a pound according to the weight of his partner. If the ladies should happen to overestimate their weight, it isn't considered a sin, as it is for the benefit of the church. Persons taking tlie New York Excursion train September 6, can secure round trip tick ets from New York to Albany by Hudson River day boat line, good for ten days, for $2 2. r > in addion to the New York ticket. To Albany and Saratoga and return, sl, making the cost of the trip from Towanda to New York, Saratoga and Albany and return, $9 20. JOHN DECKER is now canyasing this place for an article which ought to find a ready sale in every household, as it will commend itself on examination. It is an Ironing Board so constructed that while it is durable it is readily folded up and put out of the way when not in use. We ask for Mr. DECKER a cordial reception; we believe the introduc tion of the article he is offering will prove r great benefit to all who have ironing to do. There is so much truth in the following from the Whitney's Point N. Y., Reporter, and the editor's experience corresponds so exactly with that of other editors, that we presume the article will have a wide circu lation. We make no apology for appropria ting it: We have always been willing to publish no tices of marriages and deaths. Also festivals and otuer things of which the object in many instances was to make money, and by so do ing we have given away hundreds of dollars worth in advertising for which many papers receive pay, and in almost every instance some merchant would have been glad to have paid the easli for tiie same kind of a notice of their business. Yet people have become f.o habituated to this, and it is so free that they do not appreciate it as a kindness, but will walk into our office and order us to put this or that into the paper this week and in some instances will tell lis we can write it up that they have not the time. Now we wish to say to all such that the Jieporter is a pri vate enterprise, and if it fails to meet expen ses it is our money and not yours that will be lost. llow would it look for a couple to go to one of our clergy and say,'"here, you marry us,'' and walk away without paying anything; or here is a funeral, you go and tfcnd it! Or to the lawyer, here you draw up this mortgage or deed, I have not the time, and then if he gets one word wrong, blame him, but never offer to pay. The idea that what you handed in is news! so is a good fresh advertisement to our read ers. We love to do a kindness, and love to be generous when we have anything to be gen erous with, but when we help some one we want them to know it. We are perfectly wil ling to have our neighbors come in and ask lis to make mention of this or that, which in most instances is equivolent to a free adver tisement, which is worth money to somebody. When we attend a festival we are perfectly A'illing to shell out our money, if we have any, and when our neighbors come in and ask us to subscribe to this church or society we love to give something which we think we can say we always have, but if we were as selfish us some people act with us, churches and societies could never raise a dollar, for 7io one would have a dollar to pay. One church society and one ladv have ask ed us to take a dish of icecream free. It was such an unusual request, that we declined. We will say to both, however, that we do ap preciate your generosity, and shall think more of you, and when you want a good lo cal notice in the Reporter come right in and we will write you up a slasher. We have not intended the above suggestion as a personal matter, but call attention to it bn general priuciples.
