THE VERY LATEST— StyIes in men's, chil dren's and boys' suits, overcoats aud fur nishing goods can he found at Jacob's Cloth ing House as he has just opened an immense stock of Fall ami Winter goods. Mr. BENJAMIN WATTS residing just across the Chemung liver near Waverly was the loser of a horse and buggy on Wednesday evening. He attended the clain bake at Che mung. When he arrived there he hitched the animal, which belonged to his mother, Mrs. M. E. EIDENBERCER, to a post near the clam bake and left. When lie came back for his turnout it was gone. The beast was a little brown mare weighing 900 pounds and about thirteen hands high. The wagon was a squrc box top buggy, painted black with a gilt stripe about one inch from the top of the box Mrs. EIDENMERGER has been very un fortunate in the loss of horses, harnesses and wagons this summer by theft, and railuoad accidents. We understand another horse was stolen from the clam bake in the same manner.— Elmira Advertiser. Brother VANGELDKK of the Lcßaysville Advertiser has visited the poor house and has this to say in regard to it: As we drove lip to the front af the large and cheerful looking buildings which had been erected for the home of the poor, a feel ing of gratitude came over us as we recalled the great interest tak n in humanity here ex hibited in money generously spoil t> provide such an excellent home for those who cannot care for themselves. More than this,it is pleas nnt to know that our county is composed of a class of people who by their votes have made ample provision to care for their poor, equal, if not quite as well as a majority of the families who pay taxes to support it. On entering the premises, we met our old friends, Alden Iveyes and S. \\ . Moscrip, the master workmen upon the buildings, also Commissioner Daniel Bradford, who has giv en the construction of the building his per sonal supervision. After a night's rest and a good breakfast in the morning we were shown through the building by Commissioner Brad ford. We found all the apartments well ar ranged, neat and convenient for the purpose designed. We found every room well venti lated and supplied with water from a reser voir in the building above. The main bu ld ng is three stories high and is llxtto feet and is well arranged and occupied by the over seers. The north wing is 44x100, with a wide hall running the whole length and scat- cd. with sleeping rooms on either side. In these rooms are single beds resting on iron bedsteads. Bath rooms are also connected and are frequently used by the inmates—hence f lie cleanliness of I heir persons ami l lie rooms thoy occupy. The east wmg is ftxST, and is similarly arranged and occupied by the fe males. 11l this department a day school is kept lor the instruction of thoehildren. The basement i> used in the different, dapartnients as follows: kitchen, dining-room, milk, veg etables. coal, storage, Ac. There i> also a nnall drugstore connected withthe institution for the benetit of the occupants. In the rear of the main buildings is the one constructed for the insane. It is neat, substantial y built and well arranged, and is being t-nclo-cil by a high substantial lence to prevent the escape of the inmates. The number of persons received up to last Friday was niuetv-three. We are told that many <f the inmates on entering the institu tion arc compelled to do so on the baptist plan by being thoroughly immersed, puritied and supplied with a clean robe which proper ly (its ihem for admission to their new homo. Mr. If. M. Ferguson, the Overseer, is evi dently the right, man in the right place. He is kind to the imitates and prompt in earing for the wants of each. More than this, every mom in the building is carefully looked after tnd kept neat ami clean, and the table fare is good and wholesome, and everything hears the appearance of a well regulated home for the county poor. The building of a large barn for the aecom- ovulation of tlie farm products seems to be quite necessary to complete the property in ail its appointments. •When huilt the people in our county can justly feel proud of this ''in stitution," for we venture the assertion that its equal, all things considered, can't be beat in the State. Jt lias all the modern improve ments, is substantially built, well lighted, and lias a cheerful and pleasant appearance in ev ery department. Much credit is due our Com missioners who have had charge from the beginning and who have exhibited such good taste and judgment in the whole affair.— Mr. Daniel Bradford the Western Commis sioner, as a reward of merit, should certainly be re-elected for another term, and we have HO fears but that he will be, as his name is prominently mentioned everywhere.
