It is our aim to so conduct the paper as not to do any one injustice, and' nothing was far ther from our thoughts than intention to injure the political prospects of Mr. IIULL of Athens, when we penned the following paragraph the other d iy: The announcement; this week of C. T. , Hull as a candidate for County Treasurer has created quite a stir among- many lie- j publican politicians. The fact that the ami mncement was made immediately af- - ter a well-known ''boss'', manipulator ; from the western'part of the county had been in Athens 'Hooking; at horses," is considered very suggestive. But our usually level-headed, "good-na ture 1 cotemporary, the Athens Gazette got terribly "riled" over it and pronounc ed the statement a falsehood. With alii deference to neighbor Hint-oil's assumed j in'the premises we beg leave : to nd; him to retract. The statement of the !IF.MEW was literally true. The an nouncement of Mr. Hull's candidacy van made simultaneously wiiha visit to Alli ens from the gentleman referred to, and this lact was considered suggestive- by some Republicans. We did not sty the : two events had any connection, but sim ply that some people coupled them. It makes little difference to us who the nom inee for Treasurer or any other olliee is, only that they are good men, and the par- j ty cannot afford to nominate had men. j We have no doubt the nomination of Mr. Hull would be satisfactory to the Republicans of the county, and we can see no reason why*he may not be a can- \ didate with as much propriety as any of; the gentlemen who aspire to t he position. As to the charge of infidelity made by ! some of his rivals, that is a question he must meet himself. In the long run men i find it better to be honest in politics as well as business, and the tricks by which I politicians seek to advance their intere >ts I at the expense of honor do not long avail i with an impartial constituency. This is not intended as a reflection on any one, a* we have no knowledge impli cating any of the candidates with chica- i nerv or unfairness in the present canvass. ! We simply make the suggestion that it; will not lie safe lor them to resort to! such means. The following is the full'text of the l'ope's letter of sympathy to the Presi dent, dated at Rome, Aug. lf>, 1881. and : Secretary Blaine's reply: As the Holy Father learned with pain ful surprise and profound sorrow of the horrid attempt of which the President, was the victim, so now he is happy to felicitate His Excellency upon the news that his precious life is now out of dan ger, and will ever pray that* God may 1 grant him a speedy and complete recov- i ory of fiis health, and long spare him to I lie benefiit of the United States. The t i undersigned has the honor to join in thes 1 sentiments of sincere congratulation and I wishes for a complete recovery. [Signed] CARDINAL JACOBINI. SKCRKTATY BLAINE'S REPLY. Please convey to His Holiness the sin cere thanks wii.li which this government received the k'ticl expression of his pray erful interest in behalf of the stricken President. .Since your message was sent the President's condition has been chang ed and we are now filled with anxiety, 1 I but not without hope. The President has been very deeply touched by the pious interest for his recovery shown by ail | churches, and none more widely or more I devoutly than by those of the Roman Catholic communion.
