WEBSTER'S UNAARIDGBD—ILLUSTRATED. -In all the essential points of a good diction ary, in the amplitude and selectness of its vo cabulary, tn the fullness and perspicacity of its definitions, in its orthoepy and (cum gra ve salis) its orthography, in its new and trustworthy etymologies, in the elaborate but but not too learned treatises, of its Introduc tion, in its carefully prepared and valuable appendices,—briefly, in its general accuracy, completeness, and practical ulility,—the work is one which none who read or write can henceforward afford to dispense with. —Atlantic Monthly. The Elmira Free Press is responsible for the following: The two little cbidren of a widowed mother were play ing near the bouse one day hist week in a neighboring county of Pennsylvania, and discovering a hollow log, one of the children'hrust its head into tlie opening. The child immediately jumped back with ail agonizing shriek. The other child, curious to know the cause, ran its hand in the log and fell back with a cry of pain. Both had besn bitten by a rattlesnake. The mother hearing the cries of her children, quickly sat down a kettle of boiling water which she had in her hand and ran to ascer tain the cause of the ehilhren's suffering. In the meantime a creeping baby overturned the vessel and scalded itself so terribly that it died in a short time thereafter. Both chil dren bitten by the snake also died. The grief of the mother is said to have been al most uncontrollable. In one of the monthlies for September there is a very attractive and beautifully il lustrated paper on the Thousand Islands. Among others notices it has the following: "Manhattan Island is composed of three is lands, if you will pardon the Hibernicism. These little islands are joined together hv pretty rustic bridges thrown across the divid ing channels, and here form the settlement known as Manhattan Island. At Packers Island three similar fragments make a unit in a similar manner. The latter is owned by the family of the late Judge ASA PACKKK of Pennsylvania, whose beneficent life and mu nificent testamentary disposition of his vast estate have won such proud and just distinc tion. At night the islands which are built upon present a beautiful spectacle. Many of them have adopted devices contrived by means of colored lights. One is a heart, oth ers are anchors, crosses, stars and circles, and their effect is extremely beautiful, reflected upou the smooth surface of the river."
