day with some of his Towanda friends.
Mrs. I. P. SPALDING and daughter, Miss
KLI.A, are home from their western tiip.
O. D. KINNEY arrived home yesterday
morning, after a two weeks' sojourn at Asbury
Park.

M. SMITH will attend a pie-nic at Dushorc
to-uay.
Mrs. PEEL desires to inform her pupils
that she will return to Towanda and resume
her classes on the 25th inst.
CHAN. F. CROSS and family spent last week
at Lake Carey. WILL DECKER has charge
of the hook store.
Master JOHNNIE MUKKAN. is spending a

at the Ward House.
Miss LII.LIK P.LAKKSLEK, of Lynn, Susque

Judge MORROW has returned from his .sum
mer vacation trip and listened to two good
sermons at the Baptist Church yesterday.
CEO ROE Exsisand CLARK PORIEU dined
yesterday on a ten pound sheeps-head fish
caught in "old ocean" by Senator DAVIKS.

The annual parade of the Towanda Fire
Department is to come oft* on the 22d of Sep
tember instead of the 20th. as stated .Satur
day.
A foreigner with a eage of trained birds
and rats, attracted large crowds to see his en
tertainment, given along Main street last
week.
The Hiooting match Saturday resulted in a
victory for the Leßaysville team by a score
of 400 to 398. A. P. LA PLANT, of the Tow
anda team was the champion, scoring 48 out
a possible fifty. £
The Mercury has again made its appear
ance, this time as an eight page paper.
Among other interesting features it contains
the opening chapters of a thrilling Scandina
vian romance, written by WILHELM JENSEN,
and translated from the German by the edit
or's accomplished sister. Miss LILLIE MER
CUR, who also contributes quite largely to
other departments of the paper. The Mer
cury is one of the best, if not the best ama
teur paper published in the slate.
A pie-nic party numbering about one hun
dred. composed mostly of North Towanda
people, with a load or two from South Tow
anda and the borough, visited the poor house
on Saturday. After partaking of dinner 111 n

grove Oil the farm. Mr. CORNELL, the polite
and efficient superintendent escorted the par
ty through the building. All felt well repaid
for the trip and expressed themselves as en
tirely satisfied with the manner in which the
institution is conduced.
On the return trip about half the party took
possession of J. 15. SMITH'S spacious grounds
in front of his house, improvised tables and
spread a sumptuous evening repast.
If you do not go to Watkins next Tuesday
you may never have another opportunity,
and then you will never cease to regret that
you remained at home.
The News Condensed.
Three more theaters will open in New
York this evening.
For the year ended the JOlh of .June,
82, 100,000 was expended on mail bugs in

The excitement over carbonate discov

continues. A new town has grown up
called West Virginia, which is well rep
resented in all branches of trade hnd sup
ports a daily newspaper.
The excursion to Wat kins (.Hen on Tuesday
will be under supervision of experienced rail
road men, and 110 pains will he spared to
render Ihe trip pleasant and profitable.
The President's Condition.

night, and this morning expresses him
self as feeling comfortable. The temper
ature is one degree less than at the same
time yesterday. 11 is general condition is
good. Pulse, 100; temperature, 99.5;
respiration, 18.

The President has done well this morn
ing. His temperatere has fallen half a
degree since the last bulletin was issued.
At the morning dressing the condition of
the wound was found to be excellent and
the discharge of pus adequate and healthy.
His pulse is, 9(5; temperature, 1)9.3; res
piration, 18.

The condition of the President lias not
materially changed since noon. The af
ternoon ferbrile rise is about the same as
yesterday. Pulse, 108; temperature, 100.
