Although the prophets who designate a particular day for the end of the world are justly the objects of ridicule, it is no matter for mirth when the foremost as tronomers of the globe declare that no evidence exists to show the improbabili ty of the destruction of the earth I) 3' its collision with one of the innumerable bod ies which fly through space on courses which no man can estimate, Prof. Dra per has indulged in some speculations concerning the earth's future as lugubri ous as any prognostication of Prof. Proc tor or Mother Sliipton herself. Ho re gards the cornet now fading from sight as but one of the isolated bodies of all sizes which throug the interstellar spaces and witli some of which the earth may at any time come in contact. He reasons as follow: "Now the sun is moving through space at the rate of from twenty to forty miles a second, and may at any time fall in with a body of inconceivable size, which being drawn toward it and rendered luminous by its heat, would be turned from a dark, invisible mass info a radiant comet. In deed it is pretty nearly certain that in the course of time our sun will run foul of some other system of stars, which will bring the solar system to an end. It is not impossible that our system, should it fall in with a sun of sullicient size, might itself be turned into a comet, and so come to an end. The possibilities that lie buried in the uuiverse of stars and nebula) are limited only by each man's imagination. There may be systems as complex as our own, or much more so, which have lost their light by the lapse of time, and are now invisible; and such an obstacle lu our path would not be dis covered until we were close upon it." While prices have been going up and down and down and up during the past few weeks or months, and bulletins of en couragement and hope have followed bul letins of danger and disaster, as one crowd of speculators or another chanced to be in the the real business interests of the country have been steadi ly advancing. The wheat fields of the West are becoming golden with the promise of the harvest. All the South land is covered with its precious burden of coi ton, rice aud corn. The oil wells of Pennsylvania are bubbling up their wealth as generously as ever, while Colo rado, California and Nevada are yielding their treasures of silver and gold in undi minished streams. New England's Mills are the busiest workshops in tlie world. The picture everywhere is a picture of peace ond prosperity such as the world has never seen. All these form the solid, substantial basis on which the couutry rests, and so long as they arc safe it is of very little consequence what Wall street may or may not do. It is only the fly on the wheel, and if every once in a while it is crushed nobody suffers except itself. I. J. Vaumantcr, city editor of the Pe oria, 111. National Democrat , states that he has discovered that the infernal ma chines, recentl}' received in London, were manufactured in that city. A director of the Association of United Irishmen lives there and is supposed to know all about the matter. There were ten of the ma chines made and shipped to New York where they were loaded with dynamite, and then shipped to London. The manu factory is on South Washington street. A reporter has been invited by one of the interested parties to witness an exhibi tion of tne destructivejpower machines. The trial is to be made in Tazewell coun ty, a mile from the city. The astronomers are all at sea in re gard to the identity of the new comet. A Cincinnati sage asserts that it is the famous one of 1037, while the wise men of lloston incline to the belief that it is an entirely new astronomical acquaint ance. Until they shall have agreed it is, of course, idle for the unenlightened to have an opinion on the subject. It seems as hard to get astronomers as doctors to agree. A severe drouth has commenced in the vicinity of Orange, N. J., and market gardens have suffered a loss of many thousand dollars. Huudreds of wells, cisterns and streams are dry. In Orange many families buy water. Business Cards. ALVORD & SON, JOB Pll INT EES, DAILY REVIEW OFFICE, Main Btrect, Towanda Pa CIIAS. K. LADD, M. D. PHYSICIAN AND SURGEON.
