FROST'S SONS very temptingly display
those handsome verandah chairs. The bright
color in which they arc decorated makes
them very attractive and ornamental.
The directors have awarded S. 11. BEAN
the contract for repainting the interior wood
work of the graded school building. He pro
poses to do a first-class job. and has gone to
Wilkesßarre to engage workmen.
These are jolly times for the children who
are wise enough to attend Sunday School. —
Two pie nics this week. The scholars of the
respective schools will be treated to excur
sions and a dinner in the woods.
A former resident of this place now en
gaged in business in the west writes to a rel
ative here that-his daughter had made her
self a hammock, but had no trees under
which to suspend it, and adds " if you ever
conclude to come west 'and grow up with
the country,' don't locate in in a treeless prai
rie town."
The Third Brigade, National Guards of
Pennsylvania, to which the Ninth Regiment
is attached, will encamp at Wilkesßarre from
Aug 23d to 29th. The inspection by the Ad
jutant General wili take place during the En
campment. The Ninth Regiment will be in
spected oil Thursday, Aug. 25, at 3 p. m.
The Brigade will be reviewed by the Gover

requres the attendance of all officers and men
unless excused by the Brigade Commander
for such reasons only as would prevail in ac
tual service. Since the men are now paid for
live days service, the attendance of the Guard
will no doubt he very large. Co. A, of this
place belongs to the Ninth Regiment.
Monday's Elmira Free Press says: "A
young man by the name of CAMPBELL, of
Litchfield, Pa., hired a horse and buggy from
FITZGERALD A PARKS, liverymen of Athens,
yesterday, and took his girl out riding. The
horse it would seem, was allowed to go his
own gait, as the young mail's arms and hands
were otherwise engaged than in managing
the reins. The horse naturally struck a walk
and without any guidance to control him, rail
the buggy into the gutter. Frightened at
this, he ran away and got beyond all control.
r l'he buggy was tipped over and the horse's
legs so badly cut and otherwise injured that
lie is about useless. The buggy was complete
ly demolished, but the chap and liis girl were
unhurt. It is said that even after the acci
dent he wanted to drive on further.
A SUGGESTION TO BUSY HOUSE WIVES,
PIC NICKERS AND OTHERS.— The labor of
pr< paring a dinner these hot days is often
dreaded, and pie nickers, excursionists, &c.,
do not always know where to provide them
selves with suitable provisions. We have
learned something in this respecf which may
be oI advantage to our readers, and we give
the information free, although it looks as
though the firm who are to profit by the sales
ought to pay for the advertisement. STE
VENS Si LONG have a large assortment of
canned and potted meats, such as boneless
turkey, pressed chicken, ham, etc., put up in
small packages, and sold very cheap. One of
the smallest cans of boneless turkey makes
an ample meal for eight or ten and costs only
0) cts. A can of prepared ham will supply
meat for several dozen sand witches. The
meats are all of the best quality, prepared
with great skill and would do credit to the
test cooks.
OPERETTA AT TROY.— The rendering of
the beautiful operetta, " Bed Riding llood'3
Rescue," by Prof.Williams' music class was
a highly creditable affair. The costumes
were tasty, the parts well supported and the
inusic excellent. Che general excellence of
the class, ior the short time it has been under
drill, fully supports Prof. Williams' reputa
tion as an able musician. We understand
that he intends organizing a class at Towan
da, and we hope he will receive the cordial
support which merit as a gentleman and
skilled musician demand. TROJANUS.

Mr. GEO. 11. WOOD:
