as a signal. Train will leave from the Court
House at a quarter before eleven. Returning
■will leave the grounds at a quarter before six.

MYSTERIOUS KNOCKINGS.— The family of
J AS. 11. PIIINNEY have been very much an
noyed and considerably frightened the last
two or three nights by unaccountable and
mysterious doings at their residence corner of
Third and Bridge streets. Night before last
—Tuesday, between 8 and ID o'clock they
heard a knock at the door, and on answering
it no one was found at the door, but immedi
ately another knock was heard at the next
door, and so on all around, and on going to
the door every time there was no one there.
Last evening—Wednesday, the performance
was repeated, and a large cobble stone was
thrown through the window into the house.
Officers MOFKIT and JOHNSON WELLES were
called, but did not succeed in capturing the
offender, although lie made himself heard
while they were there. Whoever he is, he is
very agile in bis movements, being able to
knock at the door and get oil' tin- steps before
he can be seen.or caught. It is certainly a
very mysterious affair, and what it means or
what the motive of this berson can be, Mr.
PIIINNEY and bis family are utterly at a loss
to know. Wo understand other families in
tlie vicinity have been annoyed in the same
way, and probably by the stiuie person.
Ston s have boon thrown through the win
dows of Mr. ROACUE'S house, who lives
near by, several limes. — Journal.
To the end that none of our numerous read
ers in this borough may plead ignorance of
the law, we re-publish the new dog ordinance
with the suggestion that the borough author
ises are in "dead earnest.'' and will see to it
that the law is enforced. " A word to the
wise is sufficient":
0:I)INAX( E.
At a special meeting of the Council held July 11,
1881, at which all the members were present except
Councilmen McCabe and ltahm, the ordinance
passed July 12th, 1885, was ammended as fallows :
Be it ordained by tlie Burgess and Town Council
of the Borough of Towanda, and it is ordained by
the authority of the same, that the ordinance passed
July 12, 1880, in relation to dogs running on the
streets of the Borough, tie amended as follows:
That from the first day of June to the 30th day of
Seoteinber of each year it shall not be lawful for
dogs to tie upon the streets within the Borough
limits, without a muzzle, either with or without its
owner; and it shall be the duty of the Pound Mas
ter to seize, or cause to tie seized, all dogs so run
ning at large and impound them in a secure pound,
and unless the owner, or owners of dogs so seized
and impounded shall pay or cause to tie paid to the
Pound Master the sum of one dollar for the redemp
tion of his or tier dog within twenty-l'bur hours from
the time of such seizure it shall be the duty of the
Pound Master to kill nil such unreclaimed dogs.
Any ordinance inconsistent herewith is hereby re
pealed.
Under the provisions of the above ordinance
\ esterday was the last day of grace for un
muzzled dogs, and JOHN CARTER will keep
a sharp look-out and see that the law is en
forced without respect to persons.
