The Misses BLIGHT, who sailed for Europe 011 the Gtli inst., arrived safely ou the other side after a pleasant voyage. Rev. C. F. KELLEY, pastor of the church ot SS, Peter and Paul, is enjoying a visit from his sister, Mrs. MCMAXUS, and two nieces. Our young friend, MYER JACOBS, son of the enterprtsing clothing merchant of this place, caught afifi-4 pound black bass Tues day afternoon. We arc gratified to see CHARLIE Fox on the street again after his prolonged illness.— Although his averdupois Las been reduced we do not see that his stature has been di minished. Col. R. LUTHER, who has suffered greatly from rheumatic complaints, and been confin ed to his house for some months past, is now sojourning at Slaterville, and we hope may realize his highest expectations in the resto tion of iiis health. The Canton Fair will be held Oct. 5, G and 7. The Sunday school of Christ Church will pic-nic soon. Very line huckleberries were retailing at £2 To per bushel yesterday. ELMER POST, one of our carriers has taken the agency of the Wilks-Barre Record for this place. The Third Ward Grocery is to he opened again. DENNIS CLARK, jr., is to be the pro paietor, we learn. Particulars hereafter. MURRAY ENNIS died at his residence in this borough 011 Tuesday. He had suffered from consumption for a good many years.— His ase was about 40 years. Funeral this morning at 10, and the body will afterwards he taken to Standing Stone for buriui. Mrs. HENRIETTA FANNING died of apo plexy in this place Tuesday evening. Ross.— Funeral services will be conducted at the house, near the graded school building, this morning at 10 o'clock, after which the re mains will be taken to Leona for interment. Ml*. MILLER, the hackman, meets all trains, but desires it distinctly understood that full fare, 25 cents, niust.be paid for rides to or from night trains. Tickets will not be receiv ed for such trains. There was a pleasant family gathering in LeßaysAille yesterday. Mrs. M. 11. CODDING celebrated her birth-dav anniversary and in vited her husband's brothers and sisters and their wives and husbands to celebrate the oc casion with her. As one sister and her hus band were dead, JAS. 11. CODDING, (a neph ew), and wife were invited to make the num ber good. It was also the anniversary of Dr. CODDIXG'S birthday. The hostess had pre pared a bountiful feast and the family united for the first time in years, spent one of the most en/oyable days of their lives. Col. J. A. CODDING and J. H. CODDING and their wives were present, and drove home in the evening. Under date of July 10, a correspondent writes from Corning, N. Y., to the Elmira Advertiser as follows: Mr. Oscar Saunders, one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of this place, for many years connected with the hardware firm of Wxlker Si Latiirop, as fore man in their tinning department, met with an accident to-day which was truly a providen tial escape from sudden death." lie had pro ceeded to the new residence of Mr. James Iloare, now building on First street, to take some measurements of the roof, and as he commenced his ascent through an 'opening about four feet square, left for the stairway, he safely reached the third floor, when with a short ladder lie sought to gain the roof. The ladder slipped and lie fell back through the opening, iiis body and shoulders striking the edge of each opening as lie passed through. Hr. Iloare was standing 011 the lirst floor as he shot by him through the cellar-way to the ground below, head tirst. When within about three feet of the cellar bottom, his shoulders strtck upon a plank, which was resting from it to.the first floor, rnd rebounded some three feet, when he fell to the bottom, having fallen altogether a distance of some forty feet. Mr. Iloare at once summoned aid and Mr. lliram I'ritchard with his conveyance took him to his residence 0:1 Third street. Dr. T. A. Mills was summoned and found him 111 a critical condition, insensible from the fearful shock which he had sustained. An examination being made it was found that no bones were broken, and Dr. Mills stat d that his injuries would iu all probabilities not prove fatal. Mr. Saundkus is a son-in-law of T. I'. Six persons who escaped death at the New Ulm cyclone have become insane. The death list is enlarging. Col. Henry Warner James, U. S. A., attempted suicide at Hudson, N. Y., with a sword cane. He lute been been subject to fits of insanity. The Pope has appointed Rev. W. M. Wigger, Bishop of Newark, and Rev. M. J. O'Farrell, pastor of St. Peters church of New York, first Bishop of Trenton. A convention of county officers of this State has been in seession in Williams port this week. The attendance was not large. Bradford was not represented. James Bridget', a companion of Fre mont, after whom Fort Bridget' was named, and the tirst white man to follow the Santa Fe trail across the plains is dead, aged 70. It has been decided at the Treasury Department that journalists can bring certain books for their libraries into the United States free of duty. It is under stood that this decision is based on the clause in the revised statutes admiting '•tools of trade" free of duty. THE PRESIDENT STEDILY IMPROVING.
