The Elmira Free Press prints an account of the attempted shooting of LEAM FORREST, a Justice of the Peace of Smithfield township, Wednesday last, by one E. B. WHEELER. The account says WHEELER was prevented from accomplishing his purpose by the inter ference of a bv-stander, and that he after wards made good his escape. PRECEPT VS. It is said that up on the occaision of the recent examination of the cadets of the Annapolis Naval Academy, the official board of visitors receommcnded that the use of tobacco be prohibited, dwell ing at length upon its pernieurious effects, while at the very time they were discussing the subject each •'potent, grave and seignor" of the board was vigorously puffing away at a ligtcd cigar. They no doubt thought "do as I say, not as 1 do" a good enough injunct ion for the cadets, but the boys probably had their own ideas of the consistency and sincer ity of the advice administered. Burlington Items. Once more the "ever glorious 4th has come and gone. Everyone seemed to enjoy n well. Wo had a balloon ascension and a very tine display of fire works in the evening. Aside from that everything passed off very quietly. The sad and terrible intel ligence of tbe attempted assa :t-ination of the Presi dent was received with feelings of deepest regret by our people. Mrs. BaUard and Miss Al'ie Laihrop of Washing ton, who have been spending a few weeks in town as the guests of Mrs. W. 11. D. Green, have gone to SulMvan County to visit friends there. Editor Holmes of the Dusliore Review lias been spending a few days with liis uncle, W. H. D. Green. He al so paid Canton and Troy a flying visit during his stay. M. J, Long of Towanda, accompanied by ids daughter Miss Carrie, and Miss Fraukie Collins, spent the 4th with his aged mother, Mrs. Judge Long of this p'acc. Fred Morris who has been a great sufferer from that much dreaded disease con sumption, died on June 22nd, ISSI. Though lie lud scarcely reached the years of manhood at his death, yet in intellectual pursuits lie wasjfar in ad vance of his years. He was a graduate of the commercial department at Kingston Seminary 1879 and during his short stay here, won for himself many true-hearted friends. TOMMY. A CARD —A report having obtained to the effect that I made unfeeling remarks on hear ing the announcement of the shooting of the President, I desire publicly to deny any in tention of speaking with disrespect on the oc casion, neither have I any recollection of in dulging the language attributed to me. I feel as much sorrow over the melancholy event as any one, and if I have thoughtlessly said anything conveying a different impression, I sincerely regret and recall the language. JAS. KIRWIN.
