pleasantly. The attendance was large, over

quite handsome.

The balance sheet of the First National
Bank for the fiscal year ended June 30 shows
a net profit of 22 per cent to the stockholders.
The par value of shares is SIOO, but the
market price is over $250 and none offering
at these figures. Very few banks in the
country iiave been so well and honestly man
aged. The deposit* have steadily increased
until they now average over $550,000.
Advertise by the year, says an experienced
business man. It is cheaper and yields a bet
ter return in proportion to the mouey invest
ed. An advertisement should always be be
fore the public in sonic shape. If it disap
pears it is soon forgotten, and those that re
main have the superiority and advantage of
the absence of the competitor. There is only
one excuse for the discontinuance of an ad
vertisement. that of retiring from business.

GREEN'S LANDING. July 5.
The attendance yesterday at the celebration
at Athens was large and the program success
fully carried out. Naiads No 2, and Hooks
No 2 of Waverly. were present, arriving on
the 10 o'clock trains. Were met by Protec
tion Ho°e and escorted to Page's Hall. Ex
sheriff Spalding, on behalf of the citizens, and
C. T. Hull for the firemen, made excellent ad
dresses of welcome, and tendered the visitors
the ireedoni of the village thus preparing the
way for a &oeial time. Cigars and lemonade
wore sorved but no strong drinks, thanks to
the committees. At. noon all repaired to the
company's rooms and found in waiting a din
ner that ought to satisfy anyone, and convince
them of the cu'inary skill of the fair ladies
that prepared and sewed it. The parade
was interrupted by rain but came off a little
later (ban arranged in program. It was a
succ:"r,s. The oration by Rev. Mr. Hood was
a itirlng oue treating live issues. The mass
quernders were successful in their line a bur
lesque fire engine being (he chief attraction
though a numerous throng of actors followed
their c.dithumpian band. The ladies held a
festival and did nicely in raising funds for
the debt. The fireworks were fine and the
order throughout the day excellent. The
guests appreciated their kind welcome and
pid everv thing (o honor the day and their
entertainers. The music wasexcellene —fut-
nished br Libertp Corners' and Perkins post
bands. No accidents. The news during tbe
day u'om the Presinent was received with
expressions of sorrow and prayers for his re
covery.

NORTH TOWANDA.— Mess. Editors .—The
strawberry and ice cream festival held by the
Good Templars of North Towanda at their
lodge room, on the eve of July 2d, proved to
be one of the most pleasant and enjoyable af
fairs of the season. The attendance was
large and consisted of the elite and temperate
of North Towanda society, besides many
friends and visitors from neighboring towns
and villages, who are interested in the good
work of temperance; and to them is returned
the many thanks of the members of North
Towanda Lodge for their pleasant company
and the willingness exhibited by them to
help on a good cause. The attendants at the
tables were both courteous and attentive.—
The refreshments were of the best quality.—
Those luscious strawberries, that delicious
ice cream, the beautiful boquets, the many
charming young ladies, the friendliness and
good feeling that prevailed, cause us to say
we are glad we were there.
The receipts were sufficient to enable the
lodge to pay for the organ they have lately
purchased. VALENTINE.
A CARD—A report Laving obtained to the
effect that I made unfeeling remarks on hear
ing the announcement of the shooting of the
President, I desire publicly to deny any in
tention of speaking with disrespect on the oc
casion, neither have I any recollection of in
dulging the language attributed to me. I feel
as much sorrow over the melancholy event
as any one, and if I have thoughtlessly said
anything conveying a different impression, T
sincerely regret and recall the language.

Ilaye you noticed those handsome windows
at C. F. Cross' book store? If not, go there
and inspect them; then do thou likewise by
decorating your transom and side lights
around your front door, or a bath room win
dow, or perhaps an office window, or in fact
any glass in store, house or office that needs
shading from the sun, and still receive the
benefit of all the light. Many of our citizens
are availing themselves of an inexpensive
and handsome decoration, by using" Lum
Smith's Imitation Stained Glass," for which
we have the exclusive agency of Northern
Pennsylvania,, and a great variety of paterns
on hand testify to the fact that we can please
any who may favor us with calls in that line.

following flattering letter on Saturday from
a delighted customer:
CAMDEN, N. Y., May 11th. 1881.
Mr. GEO. 11. WOOD :
My Dear Sir —The picture arrived this
morning, and was paid for and taken in less
than two seconds after it was opened. It is
without doubt the tinest picture of any kind
in town; in fact, the finest I ever saw at any
price.
I cannot compliment you sufficiently for
your talent, and assure vou that you will
never regret the labor bestowed 011 this piece
of work; it will be productive of other simi
lar work from this section and to no small
amounl. I have no doubt that by putting it
on exhibition in window I could secure you
hundreds of dollars worth of work. I have
compared it with former one of same subject
made by you at sls I think, and this is very
much liner.
My wife, who is a daughter of the subject,
is perfectly carried away; you may consider
her under obligations to you. Again thauk
iug you, I remain, Yours, &c.
