MERCUR. of Towanda, on Saturday last, hired one of Jos. LYMAN'S sorrell team to go to Glenwood. Upon arriving, the horse was taken sick, and two hours and a half thereafter, died. The dead horse has been a valuable one and Mr. LYMAN lias re fused two hundred dollars for him.- Tounkan nock Standard. An Addison correspondent of the Elmira Gazette thus pleasantly refers to a former Towanda boy: Addison feels justly proud of its line bus iness streets and buildings. Also of the men who do tin* business, at the head of whom stands E. M. Welles, one of the youngest and at the same time one of the liveliest—a man who spends more money in legitimate adver tising and does a larger trade than any con cern in Steuben county. We are authorized to announce that there will be shooting on the Range on the other side of the river, below the lock, on Monday forenoon, July 4th. at a Bulls-Eye target, un der the supervision of the officers of the To wanda Rifle Club. The prize match will be called at 1:30 p. rn., and all who expect to compete must be on hand at that time. This match is open to all, and we hope the Club will be able to raise sufficient funds by it4th of July shoot to fix uj) its range. The Governor has signed the following act in regard to trespassing upon farmers' gar dens etc., which was passed by the State Leg islature the Gth ult. It supercedes other im perfect laws upon the subject. It will doubt less meet the approval of every good citizen, whether he is a property-holder or not. SECTION I.—That any person or persons who shall willfully enter or break down, through or over any field, orchard, garden, or yard fence, hot bed or greenhouse, or who shall wrongfully club, stone, cut, break, bark, or otherwise mutilate or damage any field, crop, nut, fruit or ornamental tree, shrub, bush, plant or vine trellis, arbor, hot bed, hot or greenhouse, or who shall trample or in anywise injure any grain, grass, vines, vegetables, or other growing crop, or who shall willfully take or carry away any grain, corn, rye, wheat, or other field crop, fruit, Vegetables, plants, fruit or ornamental trees, vines ot shrubs, whether the same be attach ed to the soil or not, shall subject such pers >n to a penalty of not less than five or more than fifty dollars for each and every offence. SECTION 2. —Any justice of the peace or alderman, upon information or complaint, made to him by the affidavit of one or more persons of the violation of said act by any person or persons, shall issue his warrant, directed to anv constable or police officer, to cause such person or persons to be arrested and brought before the justice or alderman, who shall hear and detennne the guit or inno cence of such person or persons so charged, and if convicted of said otlenee or offences, shall he sentenced to pay the said penalty a foresaid attached to said violations, with costs, one half to go to the party or parties injured to pay for damages sustained, and the remaining one-half to the school fund of the district in which said offence was committed, Provided, That the defendent or defendants, on refusing to pay at once said penalty, shall be committed to the common jail of said coun ty for a period of of not less than one day for each dollar of penalty imposed, unless the defendant or defendants enter into a recogni zance with good security to answer said eom plaiut on a charge of misdemeanor before the quarter sessions of the peace of the county in which the offence is committed, which court, on conviction of the offence so charged and failure to pay the penalty imposed by this act with costs, shall commit said defendant or defendants to the common jail of the coun ty for a period of not less than one day for each dollar of penalty imposed. SECTION 3 —All acts or parts of acts here tofore passed and inconsistent herewith are repeated, PRIZE MONEY RIFLE MATCH —At Towan da, Pa., July 4,1881. Under the auspices of the Towandii Rifle Club. The match will be called at 1 :30 p. in. Open to all comers. Dis tance 200 yards. Ten rounds. Position, standing oft" hand. Entrance fee, SI.OO. Re entries permitted. Military Rifles, if used as such, allowed two points. First prize Twenty Five per cent of En trance money; Second prize Fiften per cent of Entrance Money; Third prize Ten per cent of Entrance Money; Fourth prize Five per cent of Entrance Money.
