The Fourth of July entertainment to be given by the Catholics on the Fair grounds in East Towanda promises to he a very enjoy able affair. The programme enbraces nearjy all the inocent amusements and sports of the day. IIIRAM ELSBRKE and HARRY WILCOX, who are conducting a dairy and milk w agon, have commenced the manufacture of ice cream. Orders will be promptly filled. We are under obligatons to the firm for a generous supply which we promounce delic ious. We have no doubt they will be liberally patronized. The barn of ALLEN II.WOOD about two miles north east of East Smitbflold, was burned on Thursday of last week, about 11 o'clock. The barn was nearly new, of large size and first-class make. When the fire was discovered it was under such headway that a horse and cow which were in the barn could not be rescued and were burned. It is sup posed to be the work of an incendiary. The loss is about SBOO and there was an insurance of S4OO. The Eureica mower machine has scored Ms geratest victory in the heart of its enemy's country, in Ohio. The agents have disposed of 125 machines to one dealer in that slate. / The company keeps seven salaried traveling men on the road. We think it must be evident to any one who keeps posted in regard to mowing machines that the Eureka is hound to lead all other mowers. G. B. Davison of this place is one of their agents.— Troy Ga zette. Strawberry shortcake now being in order, we print the following reeipt for the benefit of our lady readers. It makes a very nice addition to the tea table, or can be used as a dessert. Take one quart of sifted flour, stir very thoroughly into it half a teaspoonful of soda; one teaspoonful of cream of tartar must he well mixed into i f , a tablespoonful of butter, one teaspoonful of salt, about a coffee cup full of water. It is best mixed with a knife, cutting it through and through, and if possible do not put your hands into it except in rolling it out. The mass should be as moist as you con well mannge. Roll it smoothly out, making two round cakes of a bout half an inch in thickness. Bake in a quick oven. When done, split the cske open; put the slices in a large dish; butter them; coyer each slice with berries and sugar fin ally making the berries the top layer. From the Excursionists. NEW YORK, June 22nd, 1881. We find this great city as noisy and busy as ever, as we feast our eyes on its interest ing sights and feed our digestive organs on oleomargarine for which it is now famous. Business appears to be run on the high pressure system, nearly every man met dashes by as though he had but a very limit ed time to occupy terra-firma, and the work of a century to do in that short space. There is a marked absence of the "free and easy" spirit so common in Philadelphia, and com pares with it much as the postal system docs with the telegraph. Broadway, its centre of gravity is usually jammed and wedged during business hours, but relief is looked for in the uuder-ground road now being built. We found the obelisk the great centre of attraction at the park. A force of men are working at the foundation, and guarding it so closely that no one can pocket it for a tootli-pick. It has an air of grandeur and mystery to all, and calls for admiration by its quaint hieroglyphics, venerable appear ance and imposing size. Conev Island has many new attractions, great improvements having been made since last year. The main feature of this noted resort is the fact of its being for the masses. The poor as well as the rich having access to if, the rates of fare being so low that nearly all can visit it, get sea breezes and take an ocean bath. One hotel employs a band of forty pieces, to fur nish music in open air, others have bands to which are added many other attractions in walks, drives, amusements, grand hotels and a capital beach, making a place of resor 1 second to no others around the city. Capt. Smith of Sewanaka fame ran the boat on which we returned, and we found him a very social man, pointing out places of interest along the route. J lis head bears lasting scars and burns received at tbe disaster last year. A stroll through Castle Garden affords one some idea of tie emigrant rush and gives rise to the wish that knownothuigism might be revived. It is true we saw some thrifty and respectable looking candidates, but the masses were seedy and dirty. But as some seventy-five per cent of them go West we of the Keystone need not complain. Don't fail to go to .JOHN SULLIVAN'S, on Bridge street, for the best five cent cogar.
