MORGAN WATERS has left at this office a strawberry of the Sharpless variety which weighs one ounce and measures seven and one half inches in circumference. The pastor and ladies of the Baptist Church desire to express their sincere thanks to the people of Towanda for the very generous patronage and encouragement extended to them at their festival Fridey evening, and for numerous donations received on the occasion. The receipts netted about #OO. In a recent letter to the Irish World DANIEL CULLINAN of this place says: Enclosed are #.'so for the Land League|from Towanda Branch. Our officers are: Arthur Burchill, Pres.; Vice Pres., Wm. Walsh; Rec. Sec., Jas Kelly; Fin. See., DominickPa tinato; Treas., Daniel Cullinan. We have 40 members, and intend to hold a public meet ing in the interest or the League in a few weeks. Let there be no compromise with Landlordism. Down with it! We dont want to do awav with 10,000 landlords and then create 000.000 landlords. We want the land for the whole people, not for a class, and nothing else will satisfy us. STILL ON IIIS TRAVELS.— We take the fol lowing noiice of Capt. /OWISCA, who spent last winter in the jail here, from the Bridge port (Conn ), Standard, of June 10: A representative of the Standard was talk ing with Chief Marsh this morning when a curious looking figure entered, lie might have sat for a picture of Santa Klaus. His face was covered with a long white beard above which a pair of bright eyes looked out from a ruddy face. His partly curling hair was down his neck under the margin of a peaked straw hat, and partly hidden by his beard he wore a red muffier. The rest of his clothing was the worse for wear. In his hands he carried a bundle of newspapers. He was smaller than the well known expressman Mr. Swan, but looked very much like him in the face. He had a curious story to tell in answer to the questions of the newspaper man. He declined to talk in anything but English to Chief Marsh, saying he talked that best, having forgotten all other languages. In brief his story was this. His name was Cap tain Zoaek aiid he was born in 1701 at War saw, Poland, and was sent to a military school at the age of fifteen. He served in the army of the First Napoleon and passed through the terrible march from Moscow, and fought in many of the battles of history in which the "Little Corporal" won his fame as a soldier and nearly made himself master of Europe, lie came tothiscountry in 1851 and served four years in the Union against the South. Since then he has been drifting about the country, lie has a wife in Paris, who is seventy-five years old. and two sons who are also living in Paris. He was very eheer ful and good tempered in conversation but showed some signs of irritation when one discrepancy in his story was pointed out. He said his youngest son was twenty-nine years old, whereas lie had not seen his wife since 1848, three years before lie came to this country. He could not be induced to see that there must be some mistake and said bis questioners were all against him because lie was from Europe. In all other respects his story was eonsistant. His appearance was that of a man about sixty-five vtars old. and it was difficult to believe that he could possibly be ninety. He is now on his way from Minnesota to New Haven, and from there to Boston, where he has friends. He lias been four inoiithson the road. He spoke of Carl Schurz and evidently had not heard that he had recently became one of the edi tors of the New York Eoeniny J'ost. as he looked incredulous when the newspaper man mentioned the fact. He said he guessed the newspapers would tell a different story, He said his time would he out November 17, so be could get his natnraiizati n papers and then he intended to go to Paris and rejoin his family, from whom lie had heard about once in three months. If he is really ninety years old and is getting out his naturalization pa pers, he must think of living some time long er.
