Jefferson Davis has written a letter re luctantly declining an invitation to be present at the unveiling of a monument to the unknown Confederate dead in Frederick county, Md., 011 the 2nd of June He seizes the occasion to say : "I am truly gratefnl to your association for this enduring mark with which you hon or the brave men who sleep their last sleep in the soil of Maryland. They died not for our cause, but for the cause of mankind, their lives_being a sacrifice to constutional liberty, the right of a peo ple to govern themselves. " Jefferson is certainly growing humorous in his old age. The people of the South had every thing pretty much their own way up to the time of the election of Abraham Lin coln, and then, because the North beat them with the ballot they appealed to the bullet. That sort of "constitutional lib erty" is good. Theexecuters of the late hereditary Princess Caroline of Denmark found r cently an old chest in the lumber-room, which not even the oldest servants re membered ever seen opened, and as no keys were found which fitted the lock, the lid was forced and to the surprise of everyone, the box contained a rich col lection of furs, loose brilliants, pearl and diamond necklaces, velvets, pieces of richly embroidered satin, canes and rid ing whips with handles of beautifully chiselled gold and silver inlaid with pre cious stones, gold cups, and in short a quautity of valuables worth many thous ards of dollars. Apparently the exis tance of this treasure had been entirely forgotten by the late Princess. Senator Logan said to the Postmaster General the other day: "James, I hope you will probe this Star route corruption to the bottom. Never mind who it touch es; don't mind either, those who cry out that the investigation will hurt the party. Reform never ruins. You remember some years ago we investigated in Con gress the sale of cadetsliips by Republi can Representatives and a result of the investigation ousted three of them. That did not hurt the party. That is forgot ten now and the party survives uninjur ed. Yes, all the better for it. Since tlnn no cadetsliips have„been sold by Congressmen." "I will investigate re gardless of cousequeuccs," responded the Postmaster General. The Census Bureau turuishes a state ment showing that the increase in the yield of wheat in 1879 and 1880 compared with that of 1369 and 1870 was 171,756,- 0)0 bushels; coin, 1,012,162,000; oats> 125,863,000; barley, 14,388,000; rye, 2,- 945,000; buckwheat, 2,030,000. Mrs. Kate Chase Sprague is busily eu g gea at her country residence in writing b'ograpliy of her father, the late Chief Justice Sahnou P. Chase. Twenty thousaud, one hundred and > veJty-eight immigrants arrived in New Yotk last week, the best record for a mouth. It is probably that the record for the month will exceed the total for the year 1878, nearly 80,000. The holder of the belt for which the pe destrians contested last week in New York, refuses to giro it to Yint, on the ground that he paid Hughes SSOO for it. A band of counterfeiters have been ar rested at Geneva, Switzerland, who have accomplices at Alexandria, Egypt, and in France. They have put 2.000,000 francs of false Egyptian money into circulation. The Council of the Reformed Episcopal Church approved the calling of a temper ance convention at Saratoga, June 21st, and requests the co-operation of all per sons to prevent the alarming spread of intemperance. Mr Fawcett, the blind Postmaster Geuearl of England, has decided to give employment to a number of deaf and dumb persons in the department devoted to the sorting of newspapers. Christ having overcome the world in his own person, has furnished to man kind a power by which they can also over come through his own indentifying him self in his divinity with human suffering and experience. Tell me what a Bible is to a man, and I will generally tell you what he is. This is the pulse to try, this is the barometer to look at, if we would know the state of the heart. I have no notion of the Spirit dwelling in a man, and not giving clear evidence of his presence, And I believe it to be a signal evidence of the Spirit's presence when'tlie "Wordfis really precious to a man's soul. "When there is no appe tite for the truths of Scripture, the soul cannot be in a state of health. There is some serious disease. Job Printing ! OFFICE. It is an acknowledged fact that the White Sewing Machine now stands pre eminent among first-class machines, for its simplicity and light-running qualities. It is a mechanical fact that the White Sewing Machine is made from the best material and of excellent workmanship, and all its wearing parts are adjustable, so that lost motion can be "taken up" in an instant. It is an undisputed fact that the dura bility of the White Sewing Machine is sustained by a written warranty for live years. It is a progressive fact that the White embodies the most practical and useful improvements of other sewing machines, together with advantages peculiarly its own. It is a money-making fact that the Wnite is the easiest-selling selling ma chine in the market, and therefore all wide-awake dealers make it their specialty. It is a gratifying fact that the White gives universal satisfaction, and that it is steadily and rapidly increasing in public favor. CAUTION. Do not be imposed upon by agents and partie who are interested in the purchase and sale of othe machines. It has become a common trick for un. scrnpulous competitors to get a White machine and put it in bad order so that they might prejudice pur chasers against it and in favor of their own machines. To guard against such contemptible trickery, we advise all intending purchasers to correspond with us direct, and we will take pleasure in giving them the address of a regular authorized dealer for the "White" in their county, or we -will offer to sell them a machine direct at special prices, and guaran tee satisfaction in every respect.
