The conduct of Senators Conkling and Piatt, is utterly indefensible from any standpoint. They were chosen, as Re publicans, to represent the great State ol New York in the U. S. Senate. At a crit ical moment, actuated by personal pique they resign their scats, depriving their State ol representation in the body, and giving the Democrats a majority—a situ ation which might embarrass the admin istration, and work incalculable harm to the Republican organization. And for what? Simply because the President saw lit to make a nomination for an im portant office in New York—a position, by the way, in which the whole nation is as much interested as the Empire State, without consulting Messrs. Coukilug and Piatt. Is the disposition of offices and the patronage of the administration the paramount interest with the Senators? If so why not provide in some other man ner for the necessary legislation of the country and then such boyish prauks as these gentlemen have indulged in would not be so much concern to the people and would not disgrace the Congress of the United States in the eyes of the civilized world. Much as we may respect the ex- Senators, we hope the legislature will proceed to choose successors who have more common sense. The President and Senator Conkling. EDITORS REVIEW :—The people are in tensely interrested in the light waged by Conkling, in the Senate, against the Pres ident's choice for Collector of the Port of New York. Senator Conkling would mislead the Senate and the people into the belief that he has been badly treated by the President. That it is " Imperial ism," and unlawful use of power lor the" President to remove a Collector with whom no especial fault is found, and to appoint another eminently fitted for the positiou, of the President's own choice. But we believe the people know better They will not be deceived. The strife in, the Senate though ostensibly about the confirmation or rejection of Judge Robertson for Collector, means more than this to the people. It means absolute power over appointments in their ive States by the Senators from those' States. It meaus a precedent that will hereafter tie the hands of the President j in regard to appointments, or it means the lawful use by the President of his! constitutional right of appointments, and j the privilige of using his free aud unqual- j lifted judgement in regard to them. It means that the established light of one or two Senators from any one state to rule the whole Senate, through the per nicious custom of " Senatorial Courtesy" s or it will mean that the Senate of the United States does not think it proper for one Senator of a great state like New York, to control the whole patronage oi his state. As we said at the outset, the people are interrested, and they uphold the President in the course he has taken. If the voice of the people could be heard and heeded by our Senators at Washing ton, Mr. Conkliug would be doomed to ignominious defeat. GAMBKTTA. Tho appointment of women as Post mistresses and their election as members of school committees have been familiar for many years. Now the Governor of Indiana enlarges the list of their public functions by making them notaries pub lic. There is good reason to believe that, with the progress of years, women will fairly divide with men the various of fice duties of public station, just as they now enter iuto many of the trades and into all the professions.
