Tli© Dailv Review. Towanda, Pa., Monday, May 9, 1881. ■DITO&B. S. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N.ALVOED. "Daily Review" only B3 cent* per month. Try it. Death's Spring Harvest. Whether, according to Mother Shipton, the world comes to an end in 1881 or not, says the Tribune there seems to be a pret ty fair chance that the people in it will. The latest foreign papers are full of bills of mortality. Typhoid fever is raging in St. Petersburg, small pox in Vienna and Paris, diphtheria in Berlin and through out Prussia, the smallpox has gained fresh strength in London, typhoid and malarial fever were doing good service for their grisly master in the seaport towns of Great Britain, while the plague has appeared in its old hunting-ground, Bagdad. Here, in New York, we know the cause of our prevalent disease ;from the epidem ic of inflamed eyes down to typhus, they are directly referrable to the filth in which we have been compelled to live. But we are not the only victims; in Philadelphia where the streets are quite as foul and the drainage (owing to defective traps and the level surface of the ground)mucli worse than in this city, the same epidem ics are found, with the addition of almost universal lung and throat affections and neural diseases. The "neuralgic wave" which medical experts now assert passes over the country at certain seasons is al ways at high tide in Philadelphia. Dis eases which belong ordinarily to summer or fall arc beginiug to reap their harvest in spring. To add to the aggregation of horrors, Dr. Leidy, the physiologist and microcopist, has recently declared that the germs of almost every disease are to be/ouud in the dust of the street, and are conveyed to the stymoch by means of the meat and vegetables from markets, and provisions. Let no man call himself hap py over his spring lamb and mint sauce; they are only wolves in disguise; tpplius may hide its pallid face iu an ice,or small pox lie perdu iu a strawberry* From all parts of the country we hear of the prevalence of diarrhoea, cholera-mor bus and other zymotic diseases. It is not likely that these are referrable in ev ery case to unclcaned streets and rascal ly commissioners. A much more proba ble cause is to be found in the fact that the ground was frozen to an unusual depth during the winter and that the spring rains and melted snow lay for a long time in stagnant ponds upon the sur face; waste wells in towns and every other receptacle of filth have overflowed, and become breeding-places of death. Such a winter as we liaye had brings our national ignorane of sanitary science to light, and if it is followed by steaming intense heat such as we had last summer, we may expect to pay for that ignorance in a largely increased death-rate. Mr. John Burroughs, in His "Notes of h Walker" iu a recent number of Scrib ner's Magazine , described the delight with which he heard a stray English sky lark, which had evidently either escaped from a cage, or was a survivor of those which were liberated in Long Island sev eral years ago. He suggested that there was "no reason why the lark should uot thrive in this country as well as in Eu rope. Acting on this suggestion, Mr. Charles R. Ilowe, of Cornwall, England, an enthusiastic admirer of Mr. Burroughs' writings, has sent him a number of Eng lish sky-larks, which arrived in New York ou Saturday last, and have been forward ed to Mr. Burroughs at Esopus-on-the Hudson, where they will be set free. Dissensions exist in Mr. Tom Hughes' Rugby Colony, according to a correspon dent of the Cincinnati Commercial , who tells an amusing story of one of the mem hers receiving a keg of whisky which was marked as varnish. When it was gone he telegraphed his friend : "Send us a keg of varnish." It came and was real var nish. The Brtish Government makes enough out of the Post Ofllce Department to materially diminish taxation and pay sal eries of the ornamental House over them. They have cheaper postage, nevertheless, than we have. Every letter iu the Brit ish Kingdom goes for one penny. The newspapers can be sent several times to and fro for the original postage.
