Tli© H>ily Review. Towanda, Pa., Thursday, May 5, 1881. EDITORS . # 8. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N.ALVORD. " Daily Review only 85 eettit per month. fry it. The New York Post's Washington spe cial of Wednesday says; "A personal friend of Senator Piatt, of New York, is authority for the statement that there is no foundation for the rumors that Sena tor Piatt intends to swing away from Senator Conkling and build up a party in New York State in the nature of an Ad ministration machine." A flagrant instance of Star route irregu larities is furnished by the route irom St. Paul, to St. Louis on the Mississippi river. Prominent postal officers protest ed against the establishment of the route, declaring it was already covered and the mails would only be delayed by the new route. It is alleged $71,000 a year was paid for transporting empty pouches on this route. The excess of exports of merchandise for March was $24,364,000; last year $6,- 464,000; for the nine months ended March $234,855,000; for last year $150,082,000; for twelve months $243,446,000; last year $104,472,000. Excess of imports in gold and silver in March was $6,445,000; last year $106,000: nine months ended March $78,623,000; last year $75,671,000; twelve months $78,043,000; last year $70,773,000. Ex-Senator Dorsey has written to Post master General James, requesting him to make an investigation in his presence of every contract with which his name has been connected, so that James will be en abled to give him in writing the true status of each case. Dorsey asks that the request be granted at once that he may not rest under injurious and injust imputations, or be unnecessarily detained from business to defend reputation against base and unfounded assaults. The "Mississippi plan" is bearing its legitimate fruit. The price of labor has advanced and the value and rent of lands have proportionately decreased in that State. The colored people no longer place any reliance on the smooth talk of the planters and the exodus is beginning to be felt' in the scarcity of labor. Pos sibly the necessity which knows no law may yet compel a more decent treatment of the colored men by the white people of that State. Col. Robert G. Ingersoll has just clos ed a series of Sunday evening lectures in the New York Academy of Music. In those lectures he has boldly assaulted every form of religious belief, denied the existance of the God of the Christain, and crucified afresh the Saviour of mankind. And still the Bible will continue to be read, the religion of the Nazarene will continue to be taught, and the name of Jesus will be spo;cn with love and rev erence and his power experienced in the hearts and lives of men *long after the memory of Ingersoll shall have rotted. The cloud over the seat of the Russian Government is bigger than a man's hand. The Czur remains in his comparatively forced seclusion at Gotschina, while the implacable Nihilist continue to plot and warn. Reports from St. Petersburg say the social and political air there grows thicker and thicker and is fraught with omens of an impending storm. Private letters describe the city as like a great gloomy prison house, and all live a con stant state of suspense. Meanwhile the outside world looks on and doubts if a people who but the other day destroyed a Jewish synagogue while the congrega tion'were commemorating the Passover, would know how to use and enjoy moie liberty if they had it.
