Business of im portance will be considered and every mem ber is earnestly requested to he present. • • The ladies of the Church of the Messiah will hold a social in the lecture rooms of the Church this evening. A special novel fea ture of the entertainment will be a drill by " Bed White and Blue Broom Brigade," com posed entirely of young ladies. Refreshments consisting of cake ice cream and coffee will be served. A CLOSE CALL. —Somebody fired a rifle on Thursday, from this side of the river, near the Court House, and the ball struck a large pane of glass in the front of Mr. GRIDLEY'S house in Fairview, and lodged m the wall on the opposite side of the room. Mr. G. in forms us that some time since while standing in his front yard a spent ball which had been discharged from a gun on this side of the riv er struck the ground only a few feet from him. He picked it up and has it yet. The account of the lowa girl who is said to have been hugged to death by her lover has caused "quite a sensation" among the young ladies of Westfiekl, New York, who recently held a meeting to devise ways and means to prevent another case of death from hugging. They unanimously passed the following pre amble and resolutions: WHEREAS, It is reported that an lowa girl died recently in her lover's arms while being hugged; and WHEREAS, Judging from experience, we believe such an event utterly impossible; therefore, Resolved , That, notwithstanding said re port, we are still in favor of hugging. We prefer to run all risks of death rather than have the beautiful, lovely, delightful, per fectly elegant custom abolished. Pomona Grange, No. 23, P of 11., compos ed of Bradford and Sullivan Counties, will hold its next regular quarterly meeting at the Hall of Towanda Valley Grange, No. 204, at Franklindale.on Thursday, May 12th, 1881, at 1 o'clock, p. m. The evening session will be open and all are invited to attend. A gen eral atteudence of 4th Degree members is requested, as business of importance is to be transacted, together with the installation of officers for the ensuing year.
