Tlie Daily Review. Towanda, Pa., Tuesday, May 3, 188!. EDITORS . S. W. ALVO RD. NOBLE N.ALVORD. (i Daily Review*" only cent per month. fry it. John M. Willson, U. S. Consul at Pan ama who lately arrived in Washington, says that it does not look as though De Lesseps ever intended to dig a canal there. Nothing like serious work has yet been attempted. Secretary Kirkwood lias sent a tele gram to Mr. Turner, at St. Louis, Presi dent of the "Freedman's Oklohama As sociation," advising him that the quest ion of the right of the colored people to settle upon the lauds in the Indian Ter ritory. will be submitted in a few days to the highest authority. If Mr. Turner de sires to be heard, he must come to Wash ington immediately. Meanwhile no at tempt must be made to enter the Terri tory. Thurber & Co., of New York, have be gun to advertise oleomargarine under its own name. They say that "for export to warm climates it is better and will keep sweet longer than dairy butter," but they add, rather too suggestively, "it will be packed on short notice in any style re quired." From which we infer that if a customer wanted a few packages in imi tation of some favorite brand of butter, he could have them. So long as this sort of imitation is not a felony, the Legisla ture will not have done its duty.— Buffalo Express. A writer in the New York Sun corrects "the erroneous statement going the rounds of the Press that W. A. M. Grier, the Pennsylvania delegate who supported Garfield at Chicago, voted for him every ballot after the first. The truth is,he first voted for Blaine, and would have stood by him had he thought his success possi ble. Then, going to Garfield, he remain ed until the fourteenth ballot, when lie went to Wasliburne, there being indica tions of his carrying the Convention at that point to those not within the inner circles of the Blaine and Grant factions. The official proceedings show that Gar field received no votes on the five follow ing ballots. The best proof that the Bible is not going out of fashion is found in the im patience of the public to sec the revised New Testament, which is announced for this mouth. No work has ever been un dertaken in which there was so much in terest felt as in this revision. The lead ing secular papers and magazines of this country have devoted much space to its consideration. If it accomplishes noth ing more, the new revision will cause some people to read the New Testament carefully wjio have never done so before. Simply as a matter of information, if for 110 other reason, every man who cares for his literary standing must become ac quainted with the revised New Testa ment.—Central Baptist. The South is willing to forget the past and shake hands over the bloody chasm. The Southern editor and ditto speaker tell us so. For instance, here is a Tenn essee Democratic organ of March 10, which, in a spirit of forgiveness, declares that "if President Garfield tries to carry out his liiggeristie and nationalistic ideas hereaway, he will find that the old South has enough bullets left in her locker to prevent the consummation of the outrage, and one of those bullets will be sent whistling through his own black heart if lie dares to disobey our people too per sistently." Tim Democratic minority in the United States Senate would vote for that editor for door-keeper every time, just to show the North that the rebell ious spirit of the South lias died out.— Norristown Herald.
