A somewhat curious case was adjudi cated at Montrose last week. Edward Williams colored absconded from Md., during the days of slavery, being a slave, and went to Montrose. There he mar ried, in course of time he and his wife amassed considerable property. About a year ago Williams died, leaving his prop erty, by will, to his wife. Shortly after his death a woman from Maryland came on the scene, claimed to have married said descedent during the lime when he was in bondage and put in a claim for his property. The court held that though they may have lived together as man and wife in the State of Maryland according to the laws or customs thereof, as slaves, in the days of slavery, as there had been no ratification of the lnarriatre since emancipation, the claim of the woman as being his lawful wife should not be rec ognized. In promptly following up the trail of the Star route conspirators Postmaster General James and the President will have the earnest support of the people. Already it is intimated that the alleged delinquents are the friends of this Sena tor and of that Congressman, and a dis position is manifest to attach all the odi um of the crimes committed to the friends of the criminals. The injustice of this effort —bom of malice as it manifestly is —is so plain that it will not succeed. It is important that no guilty man shall es cape, and it is equally important that no innocent man shall suffer. Those who are conducting the inves'tigation should "hew to the line, let the chips fall where they may." State Senator Stewart of Franklin county recently surprised some of the Legislators by asserting that in reality the actual cost of telegraphic service was much less than the cost of postal service, and yet that it cost the public twenty-five cents to send a message from Ilarrisburg to Philadelphia while it only costs three cents to send a letter to the Pacific coast. This moves the Scranton Republican to remar'; that we cannot hope for cheap telegraphic service in this country until the wires are controlled by the Govern ment. In an obscure junk-shop in Baltimore there now lies rusting the iron prow of the famous steamer Merrimac, that de stroyed two frigates in Hampton Loads during the rebellion, and was a menace to all the commerce and seaport cities of the Union until worsted in the memora ble conflict with the Monitor. The prow or j'am weighs only about 1,400 pounds, and could doubtless be purchased for a few cents per pound. William 11. Berry, agent for the Un compahgres Utes at Los Pinos, denies explicitly the report that there is reason to fear an Indian uprising in the near fu ture. lie says that the Uu compahgres are sat isfied with the recent action of the Interior Department, and have no thought of going on the war-path, and that with out their support other neighboring tribes would never plan an outbreak. Americans wili always remember that in our darkest days Disraeli, whethei urged by the Queen or not,we cannot say was our steadfast friend. He predicted the maintenance of the Union and acted as if he meant what he said. Not so with Gladstone, who complimented Jeff Davis as the founder of the Confederacy. It is gratifying to lee.ru that President Garfield intends to stand by what he has done; in other words, that lie will not reconsider important appointments sim ply to gratify the vanity of two or three members of the party who want every thing their own way.— Xorristown Her ald. The Pittspurg Telegraph says that nev er in the history of railroads in this coun try have the locomotive and car shops of the railrord companies been working more hours or larger forces; so pressed are the companies for equipments, that besides doing general repairs they are building a good deal of new work.
