In pursuance of a call by the Burgess, a speciiil session of the Council was liekl Wed nesday evening, April 20th, 1881. Members present, W. (}. Alger, Burgess, Oouncilmen, Frost, Gordon, llolcomb, Mc- Cabe ltabm, Spalding. Burgess Alger, in stating the object of the meeting, said that Mr. Rundell had com menced the erection of a wooden structure south of his place of business on Pine street and his attention being called to it, be bad is sued a notice to Mr. Rundell to discontinue the work, and remove the materials from the premises, that lie was not only violating the law in relation to the erection of wooilen buildings, but that the Borough owned the land. Mr. Rundell desiring to lay the matter before the Council, this meeting was called to afford liira the opportunity. Mr. Rundell stated bis case, and asked for permission to erect a small building for a cooler which be would remove next fall. Mrs. Ellen Madden and several otner citizens objected, on the ground that it would be in jurious to their business. Mr. llolcomb said lie was opposed to any further encroachments on the property of the Borough and should favor the enforce ment, of the ordinances, lie thought it sur prising that the Council should IK; asked to sanction the violation of the Borough ordi nances in individual eases. Mr. Gordon said that in order to bring the petition of Mr. Rundell properly before the Council be would move that it Jease be drawn renting the ground to Mr. It., with permis sion to erect a brick cooler of the height of the coal box adjoining, the said brick cooler to be removed liext fall. Mr. McCebe said there bad been a steady encroachment on some of the streets of the Borough until some of them had been reduced to a miserable alley; referring to Pine street, Mr. McCube said the lawful width as ap peared on the old survey was 49 1-2 feet, and it remained open that width where no en croachments had been made. Mr.. MeCabo continued his remarks at some length stating that while former Councils did not feel dis posed to eject the trespassers, they had al ways intended that in case the buildings were destroyed by tire or otherwise, in rebuilding they would be held strictly to the original line tff the street. Mr. llolcomb moved to substitute for Mr. Gordon's motion, the following: "That the Council approve and sustain the action of the Burgess in forbidding the erection of the contemplated building by Mr. Rundell." The yeas and liavs were called on this sub stitute. Resulting as follows: Yeas, Floleomb, Mc(labe. Rabin, 3. Nays, Frost, Gordon. Spalding. There being :i tie, the Burgess voted yea and the substitute was carried. Mr. Gordon then moved that the fence, coal boxes and other debris be removed from the north side of Pine street, leaving the staii s standing for the present. Carried by t be following vote : Yeas, Frost, Gordon, llolcomb, McCabc, Ralmi, Spalding. Nays, none. Adjourned. .J. KIXGSBI KY. Secretary. From Granville Center. MESSRS. EDITORS— Our representative. L. I>. Tavl r, was at IK in • on Saturday and Sun day and returns to 1 larrisburg to-day. lie tells us that the business at the capitol is pro gressing finely and growing in interest everv day, which shows that our representatives aud senators are at work; and of one tiling we are quite certain, that is this; that so far as Mr. Taylor is concerned lie is at work dis cnarging the duties of bis office faithfully and with fidelity to all. In connection with bis official acts he lias procured from the Mariet ta hatchery some three thousand brook trout and at his own expense lias placed them at different points in the main stream (which was once noted for trout) running through our town, beginning above Mr. Adam Innis' tannery. We understand the legislature is already engaged in modifying and making more stringent the law governing the catch in our state, and as >ur streams and ponds are being well supplied at great expense with tisli of different kinds, we trust the law will be rigidly enforced.
