The H>ilv Review. Towanila, Pa.. Monday, April 25, 1881. BDITOr.H . 8. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N. ALVOUD. " Daily Rcvietr" only !)5 cent* per month. Vry it. Rev. Dr. Hinsdale, President of Ilobart College at Geneva, is dangerously sick at Syracuse of pneumonia. Sornoa advices state that since the death of King Matietoa, the government forces have entirely conquered the large island of Savaii, and are now attending to the rebels on the Upola. The mining business has reached very extensive proportions at Lynn mountain, Clinton county. One thousand men are employed, and a stock company with sl,- 500,000 capital manages the business. The population is rapidly increasing. Secretary Blaine attributes the reports of his failing health to the exercise of di plomacy on his part in evading the swarms of visitors at the State Department, who •made it nearly impossible for him to control time enough to attend to public business. ' Secretary Windom authorizes the state ment that arrangements will be made im mediately, whereby foreign holders of six per cents can have their bonds continued at 3£. An agency for this purpose will l)e established in London. This action is deemed expedient, to avoid the shipment of coin from this country, which would become necessary if any large amounts of bonds held abroad should be purchased in the United States for continuance. The appointment of \V. A. M. Grier of this State to the position of Third Assis tant Postmaster General was not based on the sole qualification that he was the origtonal Garfield man. but was made for the additional reason that lie is eminently fitted for the office. And, by the way, it might as well be made known now that there was only one origional Garfield man and he has been taken care of. Any per son who attempts to play the General Washington nurse game on the President by representing himself as an 0. G. M. will have his troubles for his pains. The account is closed. Belva A. Lock wood, Esq., solicitress and attorney-at-law, has applied for the Brazilian Mission in a letter of consider able length to the President. M\s. Lock wood says that she is litted for the place, being a native of New York, a .d not identified with either of the factions in that State. She says she understands French, has a smattering of Spanish, and is familiar with the consular regulations. A strong card in her favor is the fact that the Emperor and Empress of Brazil are old-time friends. Mrs. Lockwood says that as no woman liaseverbeen sent abroad to represent the interests of the country, although one-half the population consists of members of the gentler sex, she ought to have the place. The Democrats continually deprecate the revival of sectional issues, and yet hardly a Democratic Senator has spoken since the present session began who has not boasted that the Republicans cannot break the Solid South. They have com plained bitterly of the Republican "out rage mill," and yet not one of them who has spoken has failed to seize the crank and exert all his power to turn it in an opposite direction to that of which they complain. In doing this their misrepre sentations have not only invited a dis cussion of old issues but have made it ab solutely necessary that the truth should be put upon record. Perhaps since Mr, Frye's array of facts and figures the Bour bon Senators will be more chary how they invite refutation of their statements. In their case, silence would indeed be golden—for the Democratic party.
