WANTED.—A gentleman wants a furnished room centrally located, Address REX, this oflice, with terms and location. The remains of little Indian papooses are being exhumed from the Poorhouse farm. One was dug up last week with very curious stone ornaments about the neck. The bodies are all found in a sitting posture and covered with a layer of charcoal aud flat stones laid in an arch ovor the grave. The following is clipped from the Wells boro Agitator. Has Bradford been imposed upon in the same manner by the State author ities ? We have here an item which w'll interest all the taxpayers in this county. For a num ber of y ars the State authorities have been in the habit of charging Tioga county with a 4| certain sum 10 be assessed and collected as a State tax. In 1878 the Commissioners came to the.conclusion that the assessment was il legal in form and entirely too high. The time having passed for an appeal, the tax was paid over to the State—under protest, however. In 1879 a similar assessment was made on this county from which the Com missioners made an appeal and refused to pay a portion of the sum demanded, amounting to $1,101.89. The assessment for 1880 was also appealed from. Proceediuars were com menced against the Commonwealth to recov er the overpayment for 1878 and for an ad justment of the claim for 1879. Under the date of April sth the Commissioners were advised by the Auditor General that a decis ion had been made in favor of this county, and that they were entitled to recover the sum of $2,203.34 from the State Treasury. This speaks well for the prudence and careful oversight of our county otlieials. Somebody, THOMAS JOHNSON, the Elmira watchmaker we presume, has been enjoying • the fun of seeing maple sugar made in this county and thus relates his experience in the Elmira Advertiser: "Are you posted by experience in the vari ous mysteries of the "Sugar bush," and re sultant sweets? If not 1 pity you, and de plore the circumstances preventing the recall from "memory's hall" of its excitement and pleasure, the lack of which makes one more "green oasis" in the monotany of life. To realize the full text of its enjoyment several things must be granted, to-wit, an invitation, a large "bush," pleasant weather, plenty of flap and a jollv crowd to "kinder help along" and keep things moving. In the case of our party the requirements were more than filled as the invitation came from one of the many whole-souled, large-acred farmers of old Bradford county, Pa. Arriving at the scene of action the first work,—which of course with us was fun,—was to go through the bush with horses attached to a sleigh, on which are barrels, tubs, pails. &c., to hold the sap, which is gathered from pails attach ed to the "bleedingsides of monarch maples." With a full load we proceed to the boiling down or evaporating pans, which are not as of yore, in the bush away from all comforts, but in a building for the purpose, hard by the house where the boiling-down commenc es, and is kept un for hours until our load of "sweet water" is reduced to ten or fifteen gallons of miraculous syrup, which is drawn Off, strained and left to cool oyer night. Morning finds all bands ready for "sugar fug off." The syrup is returned to the pans, a slow lire kept up, and while it boils, sizzes and fizzes in its transformation, assisted by fltirring, the white of eggs, etc., the eager by-standers with saucers and spoons take fre quent dips, which, cooled in snow, makes, oh!! such luscious eating, which one seemes never to get sufficient of. The final test—all too soon, however, for our pleasure—comes in about an hour, when by "good authority," the mass is pronounced "maple sugar,"ready for the molds, when presto change, in a few hours 'tis weighed, and we find a realistic seventy-five or eighty pounds of "the finest," a sample bar of which accept herewith. The Foremen of Cos. 1, 2 and 3 are request ed to report at their Engine Houses, Thurs day, at 1 p. in., with their respective compa nies. for the purpose of testing a portion of the hydrants of water-works.
