Our edition to-day reaches 750 copies. Ad
vertisers will make a note of this.
There seems to be a scarcity of good ser
vant girls in this place and many families
who deaire such help are compelled " to do
their own work." It is quite as economical
but not so pleaaant for the female members of
the household.
The woman noticed in the REVIEW a fetv
days since as being here in search a brother,
Urns out to be an imposter. She was ar
rested on Friday evening by officer BURNS,
charged with stealing clothing from the fami
ly of Mr. CAMPBELL, where she had been en
tertained by the overseers of the poor. The
woman had been provided with necessary
wearing apparel by some of our benevolent
ladies.
So far only three of the borough's guests
have signified their intention to take up their
abode in the new county house to-day. They
will he escorted thither by the overseers of
the poor. .We have no doubt they will find
their new home much more pleasant than
they anticipate. The unfortunate, worthy
poor will be treated with all the consideration
and regard due their helpless condition.—
Those who have subsisted at the public ex
pense simply because too lazy and shiftless
to earn a livelihood, will be compelled to la
bor or" get right out of there." St. l'aul
had such in mind when he said "if any man
will not work neither shall he eat."
The Elmira Advertiser-s city editor must
be bard pushed for items, or else he has
been grossly imposed upon by "those well
known citizens" of that city, who it is alleged
recently yisiled this place. The following
article copied from the Advertiser of yester
day is not only untrue but grossly absurd.
If everybody was allowed to smoke on the
bridge the structure would soon be in ashes
As a caution to such "lookers on in Venice"
as (he individuals referred to in the subjoined
•article, the County Commissioners have
caused to be placed aP either end of the
bridge, in large letters, in conspicuous posi
tion, notice that smoking is not allowed
there. The bullilins are so plain that even
city swells ought to see tbern. When they
do not heed the silent warning they arc cer
tain to fall into the hands of SENECA, the
v igilant guardian. The Elmira gentlemen
should remember the fable of (he old man
and the boys who were stealing his apples:
It is customary in hotel, depots and public
places to post signs reading something like
the following: ''Gentlemen will not smoke
here. All others must not." You can al
ways coax a man with much less trouble than
to attempt to drive hirn, and therefore when
they see that sign, each one consideres him
self a gentleman, and therefor desists. Last
week a term of eourt was held in Towanda
at which attended three well-known entle-
Elmira. As gentlemen sometimes
will, these persons bethought themselves to
take a stroll to settle their hotel breakfast
and before the assembling of the mornin<*
session of the Court. As tbev walked they
smoked, and smoking they walked upon the
wooden bridge over the raging Susquehanna.
Little recked they of the fate that was in
store for them. Puffing their cigars, thev
gazed upon the beautiful landscapes of the
billy surroundings, mingling the smoke of
fragrant Ilabanas with the misty haze of the
morning air. Calmly walked they and rap
turously communed
"Slnvc to no sect, who took no private road
But looked through nature up to nature's God."
°fi* the bridge a person in
vited them to the office of a justice, where
(hey were requested to leave a fine of five
lor violation of the ordinance
foi bidding smoking on the bridge, and this
•n spite of tne fact that there wis no sign on
(he structure for the guidance of the wav
farer. That seems to be a queer way of do
ing business, and wc understand an appeal is
to be taken..
It should be thoroughly understood that
hereafter when any outside barbarians desire
to go to Towanda tbey should leave their ci
gars on the sill of a fence post until they get
back again, or else hire a small boy to ferrv
the terrible weapon of destruction across the
river while they walk. It would not be ask
ing anything unreasonable to suggest to the
county authorities to put up a sign.
