NEW YORK, APRIL, 1881. The late Spring comes to us with am ple provision for every material require ment. Dealers and buyers are alike de lighted, and the streets and stores pre sent a scene of glowing beauty and activ ity Dress goods cover the entire ground of possibility in the matter of color, text ure and combination. Ilats run a gamut of grades and sizes from one extreme to the other. One can scarcely go astray, either in the class of article, or in the fashion of its make or trimming. It is the specialities of commerce upon which the public mind is most frequently exer cised Ladies arc just now on the qui vive con cerning the coralline corsets, an article a* near perfection as a corset can be. The South American product being used ex clusively by Warner Bros. in their fam ous corsets, is a great improvement 011 horn or whalebone which sooner or later warp by contact with the human body. The new substance is light, flexible and durably, and is destined to work a thor ough revolution in the corset industry of the country. So much for the figure—now for the face. L. Shaw, a lady artist, whose goods are known to the creme <lf. la crcrne of all sections, claims to have discovered the bona fide secret of beauty possessed by the late Empress of the French, who was not more favored than many Ameri can ladies of similar type. The charm lay in the successful application of such cos metics as could not fail to contribute to the suppleness of limb and softness of contour, for which the fair Castilian was famed. Those who have tested the crenic. blanche and cremc Vimperatricc know that their action upon tnc tone and texture of the akin is magical, and that mammarial balm will round the proportions of a delicate figure, and promote a healthy circulation. In the nursery of the mother, and at the toilet of the belle, it is alike effective. There can be no possible objection to extraneous agents which tend to the promotion of health and happiness; but cosmetics of any kind should be subject ed to the most rigid chemical test. Nit rate of silver will speedily settle the ques tion concerning the purity of ingredients employed in the manufacture of such arti cles as "are found at the Parisian salon, ."4 W. 14th street, New York City. Madame Demorest's preliminary open ing was attended with the usual crush; though the press and the public found enough of beautiful novelties to keep pens, tongues and fingers busy for months to come. There is nothing so successful as success, and the tons upon tousj of patterns supplied by this firm to all parts of the world attest the carefully acquired facilities of this house for rendering their widely-known publica tions standard authority concerning the latest modes and methods of ladies' attire. Au excellent thing for over-worked edi tors, and all persons inclined to insom nia, is an invaluable therapeutic agent in the form of a sleep-giviug pillow, said to be composed of a somnolent tonic and certain aromalic herbs, the odor of which acts upon the inuscuous surfaces of air passages during sleep, soothing the senses to repose, and even curing by escalation and absorption, chronic dis orders which were impervious to the effect of medicines, Tourists should give this matter a thorough test. Dr. F. 11. Hubbard, Chief Justice Harper, Mrs. Jennie June Croly and others have given their endorsement to the "Hypnotic Pillow," of which Messrs, Lord & Taylor, of New York, are sole agents—and one can even afford to go astray in such axcellent company. The elegant dinner given by Mr, Styles to a dozen gentlemen representing lead ing food firms of New York, was an event worthy to be chronicled, inasmuch as the bill of fare was made up of edibles prepared entirely after new and improved methods by which the quality of all pro ducts, whether of earth, sea or air, is greatly improved, and the cost materi ally diminished. The meats employed were put up by the St. Louis Beef Can ning Company, who comprise in their operations the greatest amount of skill as yet eliminated. Operating as they do from one of the great centres of the American cattle trade, their facilities are unlimited and their exportations im mense. The commerce in this form of portable provision is an important source of revenue to the country at large, yet not the less convenient to cnnsumers at home are goods of this brand, because known to every market in the world.
