A letter of Gov. St. John to the Chicago Woman's Temperance Union, sets several rumors to rights. The Governor writes: —"That many of the whisky dealers in this State are moving to Kansas City, Mo., is true, but for every saloon-keeper that goes-out of Kan on account of our prohibitory law, a suf ficient number of sober, industrious, energetic families come into the State to build a school-house, and Kansas can always afford to trade her saloons for school-houses, and drunkenness for sobriety. That part of the letter which alleges that the law interfere with the free and unrestricted sale of tinctiues or compound that are used soley for medi cine, is not true, nor does the law direct ly or indirectly with the right to admin ister or partake of wine at communion services. All such stories are instigated and circulated by the whisky ring in or der to break the force of the prohibitory law in this State, for the advocates of free whisky well know that when it has been thoroughly tested and proved, which it will be, that prohibition in Kan sas is a grand success, other States will follow our example, and eventually the policy of prohibition will be a fundament al law of the United States. Notwith standing the law does not take effect un til the Ist of May next, already the sa loons have closed in most of the interior towns of the State, and after the Ist of May we will not have an open bar in Kan sas—nor will Kansas ever again be guilty of giving the sanction of law to that which everybody knows to be wrong." Very pathetically an English lady cor respondent to an American journal de scribes the anxiety in the ladies gallery, during the Parliamentary debates on the Irish question. She writes "that the passions excited were scarcely less vio lent among those helpless, silent listners, cramped and crowded in that narrow cage like wild birds just caught, with their fine plumage all crushed and torn, their bright colors all faded. Many a lovely Irish face, whose owner had en tered all bright and sparkling, lull of life and joy at the anticipation of triumph for the Irish cause, became overshadowed by degrees as the debates went on, until in more than one instance a deadly pallor and a shower of big tears had succeeded to the expression of hope and trust the countenance had worn. One lady, whose agitation had incaeased with each mo ment, burst into a terrific paroxysm of grief as the members disappeared at the Speaker's summons, and the image of that pale face and tightly clasped hands, as she bent over the gaily decorated muff upon her lap and rocked herself to and fro, has haunted me ever since." At the closing of the meeting of Moody and San key, iu San Francisco, on Thurs day, $82,000 was rrised to pay off" the debt of the Y. M. C. A. building in that city. Mr. Moody pledged a large part of it. SOO,OOO was also raised for the evangelist ic work of the Association. The "evan gelists have been laboring on the Pacific coast for six months, and the rosult has been a iarge accession to all the churches. They go to Chicago, stopping at Denver and Topeka. The trial of Mrs. Josephine Trau, for passing a forged check of SI,BOO on the Commercial Bank of Brooklyn, was con cluded in the Kings county Court of Ses sions, Friday evening.
