The Debt and the Banks. • . .Some interesting facts in regard to the reduction of the public debt are given by the New York Commercial Advertiser. Mr. MeCulloeh, Secretary of the Treas- President Johnson, audited the government's war obligations in four "months and found, August ill, 18G5, that tlifc.Vfetal debt was $2,755,995,000, and tiie iutesest charge $151,000 000 a year. At the elose of Mr. Johnson's term his Sec retary transferred to tlie administration of Gen. Grant a debt of $2,525,000,000, with an interest charge of $124,000,000 a year. In the eight years of Gen. Grant, his Secretaries, chief of whom was Mr. Boutwell, reduced tlie principal of the debt to $2,088,000, and the interest to $04,100,000; and this was the condition of the public llnances when President Hayes took charge, with Mr. Sherman as Secretary of the Treasury, in 1877. following four years the principal of debt was reduced to $1,870,056,000, and the interest to $76,815,000 per annum. .✓The actual reduction of interest on the stocks, as they stood at the begin ning of the term, was $21,500,000, a new Suargie of $4,600,000 per annum being in" urreil lor resumption expenses. The 0 work of reduction would have r L>i>im bravely on, had it not been fori L. Democratic obstinacy and ill will to com i mil wljat could not be done. Before the of the year there would have been a notable reduction of interest charges. As Cwlll be seen very much will still be ac £i/mplishcd in that direction by a judic ious use of the linances in hand and the permission for bonds to continue to draw three per cent, after they become due, on July Ist. It is estimated that these pre cautionary measures will reduce the prin. cipal of the national debt by $70,000,000 to $90,000,000 and the interest by $lO,- 000,000 to $12,000,000, Still better would have been accomplished, had the funding bill passed and the Democrats had not been intent on breaking down the National banks. And in all that may be said in favor of the National banks, it should be especially to emphasize their efficiency iu acting as agencies in premot ing the public welfare. Their benefit to the government and community at large needs no argument No man of sense and not of warped prejudices disputes th e assertion, What a better system is de manded or other exigencies arise, on the payment of the debt aid outstanding bonds, then will be the proper time for Eussion of other or preferable systems jgggy circulation* But while there is Imbetter currency, let the National banks be sustained. * —• I.
