The Supreme Court having taken a recess
until May, Judge and Mrs. MERCER have re
turned to their home in this place.
Mrs. Lou MAXWELL is quite siek. See is
confined to her house and has hardly been
able to leave her room for several weeks.

back there again, lie is a skillful and expert

Dr. 11. W. CHAM PI. A IN, of Orwell, who
has been attending lectures at the celebarted

iu town yesterday.
JOHN GAYLORD, of Wyalusiug lately start
ed on an extensive trip to the far west, lie
was some years in California in the mining
business in the early days of gold digging in
that region.
10. C. IRWIN, general agent of the L'heuix
Fire Insurance Co., i in town. He goes to
Burlington this morning to adjust a loss. The
I'lienix is one of the companies which always
settle promptly.
Mr. O. Fisn, :tn enterprising and skibful
blacksmith who removed from Lime Hill to
Spencer about a year since, has just taken
up his residence in Terrvtown, where he will
carry on his trade.
M. E. IIKISK, representing one of the larg
est stationery houses in the United States, is
iu town. He is on his way home after a suc
cessful trip west. If there are any of our eo
temporaries or stationery dealers who have
not had the good fortuue to meet Mr. IIKISK,
we advise them to be on the lookout for him
if they want to secure bargains in stock, and
at the same time have the pleasure of dealing
with one of the most urbane, candid gentle
men to be met with anywhere.
MEL CARMAN'S horse died yesterday af
ternoon.
The several undertakers of this place at
tended Jive funerals yesterday.

HOWARD COLE, of Wavcrly, N. Y., was
apprehended by Watchman SENECA ARNOLD
yesterday, for smoking on the bridge, lie
had to pay the fine. The Commissioners are
bound to enforce the regulation.
They continue to exhume Indian relics on
the poor house farm. Quite a number of
skeletons have been dug up and Saturday the
workmen found a kettle holding four quarts.
The vessel was made of clay burned hard.
Chief of Poliece BURNS discovered on Sat
urday evening what he supposed to be a wild
duck in a cove near the eastern abutment of
the bridge. Procuring his rifle he took good
aim and killed the fowl at first shot, which
proved to be a ram avis. While somewhat
resembling a duck, it is probably a species of
snipe. The feathers are very thick and as
fine as eider dowu. Unlike the duck it has
110 tail feathers.
The thirtieth annual session of the Wyom
ing Conference convenes at Wavcrly to-mor

The revenue of the dominion for Marcli
shows an increase of $320,000.
Princess Louise, Marchioness of Lome
has just passed her thirty-third birthday.
The Tennessee Senate rejected the
House bill to pay the State debt with in
terest at 3 per cent.
An effort is being made to build a new
Methodist Church in New York, of which
Rev. J. P. Newman may be made pastor.
It is found that thousands of bees were
destroyed in sections of Illinois by the
severe winter. The loss to farmers is
heavy.
The Massachussetts Senate has reject
ed measures for the sale of the State's
stock of the New York and New England
railrord.
M. Gustave Dore has just lost his
widowed mother; her husband was a
Government engineer of bridges and
highways.
Secretary Lincoln's face in repose is
described as serious almost to sternness;
but when he smiles it grows bright and
then he "is positively and undeniably
handsome."
At a special meeting of the Philadelshia
city councils Saturday, the resolution of
the committee investigating the gas
works management and providing for eq
uity proceedings against trustees, was
finally defeated.
Mr. Herbert B. Mitchell, son of the
newly-elected Pennsylvania Senator, is
so cliaractei istic a young America that
he deserves to be "put in a book" by Mr.
Henry James. Although he has not at
tained his majority he has bougut land in
Dakota, and is going to breakup a thous
and acres this Spring.

owing by the firm will he settled.
