To-day will close the auction sale at the Jennings hotol. Remember that Dr. PAYNE'S lecture at the Institute this evening beglng at 7:30, sharp. A few days ago the Sugar Run ferry boat making a trip across the river collided with a raft passing down the stream, striking with such force as to run several feet upon the raft, which floated on with the pri/e taking the ropes that held the boat and carrying it some ways below. The next day the boat was put into position and ferrying resumed. Wyalusing, which has had two lawyers, E. F.GOKK and W. 11. THOMPSON for some time past, is about to loose them by removal from the place. They have one of the most efficient postmasters in the country, and one whose military record and services for the party entitle him to the position. " A Fair Barbarian," Mrs. BURNETT'S last and most interesting story is concluded in the March Scribner, and we advise every one who has not read it to do so at once. The heroine —" A Fair Barbarian," —is a young American lady who has lived in Nevada and who conies upon an English country town, with the suggestive name of Slowbridge, to astonish its Inhabitants by an individuality of character wholly unique. It is not fair to forestall the reader's interest by a revelation of the full plot of the story, but its more sali ent points may be suggested. The heroine is a thoroughly interesting and original crea tion. She is thoroughly American. She is en tirely unconventional in her ideas, when tried by English standards. She confounds and amazes the rigid devotees of propriety with whom she comes iu contact in this sleepy English village. All look upon her with mingled curiosity and wonder. She ab solutely horrifies Lady Theobald, who is the head of Slowbridge society, and who embod ies all that is arrogant, angular and domineer ing in the worst types of the British regula tor of the proprieties. The raciness of the seenes that attend the meeting of these par ties is indiscribable. The American girl is not an untamed hoyden, by any means. She is, on the contrary, true-womanly in the best sense of the term. She is kind of heart, sym pathetic and self-respecting—a really lovely, if a somewhat unconventional, person. She is hiah-spiritcd, too; and while she manifests a willingness to learn the standard of those Among whom her lot is temporarily cast, there is a charming youthful dignity about her which is one of the best points iu her deline ation. Of course she finds her lover. Of the result that attend his wooing, we leave the reader to learn from the storv. Dark blue dinner sets, Asiatic pattern on Parisian granite—a great bargain—at C. P. Welles' crockery store. White wash lime at George Ridgewav's, Bridge street. 190 Mr. C. A.
