in Towanda yesterday.
Mrs. A. J. EASTABROOK is visiting her
husband in Washington.
Mrs. PRURIGO, the music teacher, is again
boarding at Mr. SNELL'S.
After an absence of several months, ARM
STRONG TYLER is in town again.
Miss JENNIE IIAI.E is spending the Easter
vacation with her parents at " Woodside."

STROUD'S biciele is the envy of all the boys
there.
Prof. COPLEY has been employed as organ
ist at the Catholic church. He is also instruc
tor of the choir.
Miss POWELL, daughter of Hon. Jos. POW
ELL, who has been attending school in Can
andaigua is home.

is in town. He made a pleasant call at this

Mrs. JOHN A. PARSONS and baby of Troy,
are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. M.

Master CHARLIE MARSHALL went to New
Albany yesterday On the cares to visit his
brother who is teaching there.
Miss 111 LA NOBLE, of Granger Place School,
Oanandaigua, N. Y.. is spending a short vaca
tion with her parents in East Towanda.
We learn that GEORGE KIRBY is to take a
situation as clerk in the Tioga House, Wa
verly. The selection is an excellent one for
the hotel.
JAMES MACFARLANE, Esq., and Judge
RUSSELL, who had been attending court in
Wellsboro as witnesses in the bridge suit,
returned Tuesday evening.
We regret to learn that I)r. 11. K. SMITH
who lias been an invalid from consumption
for the past two years, now lias strong symp
toms of Rrigbt's disease. He is at bis grand
mother's in Middlotown, N. Y.
ED. LYNCH lias disposed of bis interest in
the Third Ward grocery store, and taken a
situation with PATCH & TRACY. He proposes
moving bis family to Wilkcsbarre.as his time
will be mostly occupied in that section.
I). A. LAMENT, who has been engaged in
the sew ing machine business here for several
years past, contemplates moving to Troy
township this spring to engage in farming.
Roth himself and wife will .be greatly missed
by a large circle of friends in this place.
The MESSERSMITII brothers who for several
years past have run the river ferry at Wya.

lease then expires. JAKE and JEFF are w-ell
known to the traveling public, whom they
liavc well served for some years. JOHN
MANN is to succeed them.

eligible seats are still unreserved.
We regret to hear that the proprietors of
ihe Wyalusing Star are embarrassed financi
ally, and hope they may be able to extricate
themselves.

A gentleman who lias observed the habits
of the different species of birds says the black
bird seldom makes its appearance in this lati
tude until about the time warm weather sets
in. He noticed one of these feathered speci
mens on a tree near his residence yesterday.
The entertainment at the M. E. Church last
evening was a very enjoyable affair and was
well patronized. A particularly pleasant fea
ture of the evening was the recitation of RES
SIE VINCENT, who recited an exceedingly
difficult piece without a blunder, and the dec
lamation of Master KYSKR, who did remark
ably well. The playing and singing was lis
tened to with great pleasure. At the conclu
sion of the concert ice cream and cake were
served. We judge the receipts must have
been rpiitc handsome. The young ladies who
projected and carried the programme, in the
interest of an invalid member of the Sunday
School, deserve great credit. Miss LiiißiK
WATTS, who was foremost in the good work,
is entitled to special commendation. In A
MORLEY rendered himself useful as master
of ceremonies.

The first train from San Francisco,
over the new route, arrived at Kansas
City yesterday morning. The train was
on time at every station and arrived at
Kansas City on time.
A strike among the masons, builders
and carpenters of Newark, began Monday.
Higher wages are demanded. Workmen
from other cities are arriving and accept
ing employment,

Wellington Lee, an eminent inventor
and mechanical engineer, died Monday in

Kossuth is now living in a pleasant

ty-nine years old, he is in good health,
and his inellect is unimpaired. lie spends
a great deal of time in studying natural
science.
The pressed glassware manufacturer's
of Pittsburg have resolved to shut down
their works eight weeks between May
first and September first. It is believed
that this will reduce the stocks of table
ware to the extent of one and a half mill
ion dollars.
The Italian Opera House at Nice, Italy,
was burned last night. The lire broke
out at the commencement of the opera.
Fourteen dead bodies have been taken out
and placed in a church opposite the thea
ter building. It is feared that one hun
dred persons perished in the tiames.
It is sated that Dr. J. P. Newman, for
merly pastor of the church attended by
Grant at Washington, and now pastor of
a Methodist church has signified to
the trustees of the Church of the Divine
Paternity a willingness to succeed the
late Dr. Chapin. Newman's views are
understood to be very liberal.
