The Daily Review, rewanda, Pa., Monday, March 21, 1881. EDITORS : 8. W. ALVORD. NOBLK N. ALVOIID. Temperance at the White House. The quiet and uniform course pursued, the common sense evinced and theecouo imy practiced bj Mrs. Ilayes during the four years occupancy of the White House have not only given that gay and festive dwelling a domestic and home like air, i usually foreign to it, but secured for her I the admiration of the best citizens of our land. Whereas she had enongh of the glitter and tinsel matter in her dress, habits manner &c., yet she carried out a credit able economy, practised a simplicity and evinced stamina and sterling worth, not in vogue under that roof for many years. But of all these shining qualities of head and heart for which she is famous, there is none standing in the prominence nor shining with the lustre that does the grand act of sweeping from the family board on all occasions the wine cup and champagne goblet. This was doubtless the crowning act of her life at the White House and though seemingly trifling and inslgniflcaut it has set a worthy example and marked an era in high life that wili shine on, sending its benign and salutary rays through generations to come. Wholesale and retail dealers in the traftic in that city, acknowledge the potency of the act and confess a heavy falling off in sale and consumption of fancy and XXX brand goods, following her edict. The "Department of the Table" was the ofli cial position assigned her by the decision of the Electoral Commission that declar ed It. B. Hayes president, she holding her oflice by virtue of intimate relations to the President-elect. In this case no appointment was required nor confirma tion of Senate needed. She slid in with out influence of Bosses or Rings and re ceived her commission and with it, the keys to the pantry, sideboard and wine cellar and a general supcriutcudency of the domestic arrangement of the mansion. She was master of the situation and no power of Congress could impeach nor su percede her. If Rutherford wanted to extend the courtesies of the day to call ers, friends or the Cabinet by proffering the customary glass, .a veto to such hos pitable acts by Mrs. Hayes flashed through his miud and ice water or lemonade was immediately substituted. "When a woman will she will, And you can depend on it; When she won't she won't, And that is the end of it." A fact well known by ourjehief magistrate specially in the case of Nrs. 11. before whose good sense and inflexible will he respectfully bowed. But to resume this article in a serions light, we say that this noble act has not only won for her endur ing fame but a worthy example was set for her sex and incalculable good done for our nation and the world. Yet while we surround her head with a halo of renown and praise, we have no reason to doubt that her successor, Mrs Garfield will exhibit and carry into practical use the same commendable taste, tact and .sense and occupy as desirable a stand in the interest of temperance. The rumor that she lias said she will not dictate the bill of fare of her husband's dinners we think has no foundation for we - fall to see anything in her life or character to indi cate a change of programme in the gen eral routine of life at the Executive Man sion as inaugurated by Mrs. Hayes and we will guarrantee the adoption of some temperance policy and an absence of wine at the family board. "Revolutions never go backwards" nor will Mrs. Ilayes' temperance reform, and in case any matron at that house ever try to annul or discard her honorable exam ple, vvc pity them for the shower of re buke and censure that awaits them from an indignant temperance element.
